About Elijawon
Elijawon is a Licensed Professional Counselor with over nine years of experience in the mental health field. He has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, families, couples, and individuals with developmental disabilities. Elijawon is passionate about helping others navigate unique challenges to improve their quality of life and achieve their goals and dreams. Elijawon is an eclectic counselor that does not believe in being a "One-Trick Pony," as each approach applies to the individual's different needs.
Elijawon (Eli) completed his Masters of Arts in Counseling at Kean University. He has clinical counseling, case management, and school counseling experience working with many individuals. Elijawon utilizes multiple treatment approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness.
Everyone faces challenges and situations that they try to overcome. Elijawon is adamant about guiding individuals to their goals, is an empathetic and active listener, and provides the resources to educate and empower others. Why did you decide to become a counselor?
What fueled my passion to become a counselor was that I wanted to become the person that I wish I had in my life to guide me when I was growing up and navigating through life.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients that are open and willing to grow and improve with guidance and support.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Every client that is adamant and passionate about improving their life and healing past their wounds.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew and understood empathy and the importance of mental health awareness.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I feel that Thriveworks is the place that will understand, utilize and acknowledge my skills as I want to work at an agency that provides the highest quality mental health care.
What inspires you?
Witnessing Black Excellence seeing groups thrive despite barriers and adversities.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients will understand that I am present and ready to hear their story, empathize and be their advocate, and be that listening ear that they may never have had.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
For the individual to feel ready to take the first step to on their journey to healing and empowering themselves. Self-awareness is key!
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Spending time with my family and playing fun social games or enjoying solitude to recharge.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am innovative and love to apply my ideas and strategies in creative arts and games.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
That it is a judgement-free zone and I am open to hear their story and to develop personal goals for everyone to work towards and achieve.
