Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a counselor because I saw the value for people to talk and express their thoughts and feelings. I used to be a mediator long ago for the Atlantic County Courthouse, and I saw emotions de-escalate once warring parties shared their perspectives. Additionally, I have known persons close to me that have endured mental health challenges such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bipolar Disorder.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I really enjoy working with young adults, ages eighteen to thirty, but I relate to adults overall and have the most experience serving eighteen to sixty-four year-old people. I have experience with in-home counseling delivered to both seniors (ages 65+) and children/ teens, as well.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I find excitement working with clients who would like help healing from, and better understanding, narcissistic abuse. I'm also proficient in identifying and explaining a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. I further enjoy helping clients reset boundaries, assert their ideas, reduce codependency, embrace new communication skills and increase self-esteem. I see so many people transform from feeling disempowered to free and empowered.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish clients knew how much better they can feel from venting what they have been managing emotionally causing them to struggle. People can feel better, and therapy is one route in which to affect change. Almost everyone is coming to therapy wishing something can change for the better.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks struck me as a win-win solution for clients and employees. Services are delivered virtually or in-person and just about all New Jersey insurances are accepted, making it available to most everyone. As to employees, benefits and one-on-one consultation are attractive features. Staff is helpful and friendly, as well. It struck me as a harmoniously balanced company for all.
What inspires you?
I'm inspired by people who are their own heroes and overcome obstacles....people that take action confidently and without wasting time...those who succeed despite the odds. I'm personally inspired by my own higher power, and it cements my openness to and love for humanity. I am also inspired by animals! They trust themselves and nature seems to work in harmony, while people seem to be more complex in their relations with each other; animals remind us to simplify and center ourself. I'm further inspired by the givers - generous people who use their unique gifts to help.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I introduce myself, explain patient rights to confidentiality and other formalities briefly, but strive to use most of the session to become acclimated to what the client has been enduring up until entering therapy. It's important to me that the client is heard so that some suffering is relieved.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In our first session, I would like to remind client that therapy is an overall "conversation" between the two of us and introduce myself as their co-pilot, leading them towards their desired goals. My goal is to invite them to make the sessions their safe space.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I'm an active therapist, with a warm approach. I tend towards an upbeat and curious demeanor, often like a supportive coach, but listen intently in serious moments. I help people learn how to help themselves.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
In my time off I like at-home exercising, caring for my pets, researching, spending time traveling and finding new ways to express myself creatively.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I'm courageous in life pursuits, feeling that I deserve good things in life, and I like to inspire the same confidence in others.
