About Tori
Tori Sweeting is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with nineteen (19) years of experience in the field of mental health to include ten (10) years working with Veterans. She has the knowledge and skills to successfully assist individuals with a variety of diagnoses—PTSD; anxiety & mood disorders; and psychosis—placing emphasis on the development of interpersonal and distress tolerance skills to effectively manage one's emotions. She assists individuals in identifying their vulnerabilities that often trigger negative cognitions or thought patterns with subsequent anxiety or depressive symptoms, i.e., the need to develop an understanding that our cognitions usually exist in categories; thus, indicating the need to successfully un-blend these thoughts to manage our maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Tori obtained her Master of Social Work (MSW) with honors from UNC-Charlotte. She has experience working with a diverse population of individuals including those having difficulty coping with the rigors of parenting and addressing the importance of creating a sense of self-worth in one’s ability to balance work, family, and individual time. She holds two (2) certifications, one (1) as a trauma professional and one (1) in dialectical behavior therapy.
One of the most difficult challenges is to accept the need to change our life’s story or narrative, the "Who I Am," as we transition from adolescence to adulthood to old age. As our awareness of self increases, our view of the world and the people around us change. With change comes motivation, and with motivation comes the perseverance and energy to become the person whom we desire to be. In my work with you, we will develop an individualized goal and treatment plan to ensure the achievement and accomplishment of your goals; thus, encouraging the narrative that you desire.

"Change is a life-long journey requiring acceptance and commitment to motivate oneself towards change."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
After having been a licensed social worker for approximately nineteen (19) years, I wanted to explore an area to enhance my professional development and career. I would like to generalize my skills in the field of mental health with a short term goal of becoming credentialed as a Diplomate in Social Work with several long term goals of prescribing medication; conducting research in the area of PTSD; and providing instruction on the collegiate level.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I am most experienced in providing services to individuals who have the following diagnoses: Depressive Disorders; Anxiety Disorders; PTSD; Mood Disorders; ADHD; and Psychosis with co-occurring Substance Use Disorders.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with individuals that are motivated for change or have a desire to get better.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
At times, we all encounter or experience stressors that require the utilization of skills; therefore, it is important for me as a therapist to assist my clients with normalizing their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks as it provides opportunity for me to further develop my skills as a seasoned professional and to expand my knowledge base as Thriveworks employs a variety of disciplines; thus, providing opportunity to work in a team consultative environment.
What inspires you?
What inspires me to be a better me usually occurs when I see my clients accomplish their goals and thriving, i.e., experiencing an overall improvement in depressive, anxiety, or other mental health symptoms.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I prefer for clients to have some ability to discuss their experiences that have been occurring from the previous three (3) to six (6) months and how these experiences have impacted their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, i.e., isolation or avoidance from others.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I utilize the first session as a meet and greet to assist with establishing rapport and developing trust in the therapeutic relationship; thus, developing an understanding of your needs and experiences that impact you from day to day.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
During your first session, one (1) should anticipate developing an individualized goal to ensure that one (1) achieves his/her desired outcome; some examples include: develop coping skills; understand my anger; develop an awareness of self. Developing a goal assists with monitoring progress and keeps the therapy focused...developing a balance in one's ability to discuss freely their thoughts and feelings with specific interventions/skills to alleviate these symptoms.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to cook and bake on my time off. When relaxing, I like to watch movies, travel and spending time with family and friends.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I would describe myself as a non-professional as supportive, caring, and being available outside of business hours to help those experiencing crisis while maintaining boundaries with self and others.
