About Terryn
Terryn Maher is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with over 10 years of experience working in enhanced levels of mental health care. She is passionate about helping young children who have been through trauma or major life changes utilizing play therapy, as well as adults who have identified issues that they find impact their everyday lives, relationships, and ability to parent in a healthy way. Terryn specializes in trauma-related issues, mood disorders, adjustment disorders, and anxiety disorders.
Terryn completed her Master of Arts in Community Counseling at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte. In addition to her MA, she also completed a graduate certificate in play therapy, a specialized therapeutic approach often utilized for children in the 2.5 to 10-year-old range who may not be able to verbalize and process their issues utilizing traditional talk therapy, due to developmental understanding. Terryn has also completed multiple trauma-related trainings to become a certified clinical trauma professional (CCTP), allowing her to provide trauma-informed care to all of her clients. Terryn utilizes multiple treatment approaches with adults to fit their needs including mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and client/person-centered therapy.
While our society has come a long way in destigmatizing mental health needs, Terryn understands it can still be difficult to make that first step and reach out for assistance and strives to make her clients feel as comfortable as they can with the therapeutic process. Terryn also understands how difficult it can be to find the right clinician to help guide you through the therapeutic process. Terryn is willing to work alongside you in your therapeutic journey and meet you where you are at, while also providing the insight and coping strategies you need to grow and heal. If you are ready to start, or even continue, your therapeutic journey, schedule an appointment with Terryn.

"I'm excited to get the opportunity to work with you! Here are a few things you may need to know before your first appointment. If you choose to do a virtual appointment, you must be residing in North Carolina, which is the state in which I am licensed to provide services. This is not a concern if you are choosing to come in person for appointments. If you are seeking play therapy for a child, this is provided in person only due to the nature of the way service is provided, making it a service that does not lend itself to virtual appointments. This is not a concern for traditional talk therapy with adults, which can be provided virtually."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I always knew I wanted to be in a career that allowed me to help others but I was unsure in what capacity I could achieve this. After taking my first psychology course in college, I became very interested in how the mind works and knew that this was the path I wanted to take. As I researched how I could utilize my degree to help others, I was naturally led towards counseling and have never looked back!
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are ready and open to making positive changes in their lives. I operate with an understanding that change can be difficult, and I do not minimize this, but want my clients to keep an open mind to the potential possibilities that difficult changes can spark in us. You are the expert on yourself and your experience, I am here to facilitate the process. If you trust the process (I genuinely know that is a big ask), you may be surprised at what you can gain.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I've worked with many age ranges, from little ones to retired adults, and have enjoyed working with all types of people! I have really enjoyed my time working with young children utilizing play therapy, and I have also really enjoyed working with parents who may have some of their own issues that they want to address as they may see it impacting their every day lives or parenting interactions. It has also been enjoyable to work with young adults who are moving into a different stage of their lives, whether that be school, work, or general independence.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Therapists are human too! That may sound cliché but, I think it can be intimidating to talk to a therapist about your experiences and emotions if you think the person sitting across from you could not possibly understand them, and worse, is judging you for them. We have the full array of emotions and are imperfect and this part of the human experience is what helps us to connect to our clients.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks because I wanted to work within the private practice model, but in the unique way that Thriveworks offers.
What inspires you?
The resiliency of the human spirit. It is truly incredible.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In a first session, I want to get to know you better and give you an opportunity to know me better as well. I like to address expectations (mine and yours!), learn about your goals for counseling, what led you to seek out therapy in the first place, and how we can work together, collaboratively, to achieve those goals.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Most importantly, I want to begin building a rapport with you. Not a lot else can be accomplished if you don't feel comfortable talking with me so, I like to start there. I also want to make sure I understand your goals and that our expectations are aligned.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
There will almost always be a justifiable reason not to start the therapeutic journey and while I can say with certainty that therapy can be very difficult at times, when you've found the right fit, the reasons not to go on this journey start to fade away.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to spend time with my family (giant dog who confuses herself for a small lap dog at times, included). I love to go on walks, spend time outdoors, and watch my little one learn and grow!
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Being a mom is my most important role of all.
