Why did you decide to become a counselor?
The realization that counseling was the right career path for me was during my second year at Bible college. I found myself counseling my classmates who became disenchanted with a certificate in biblical studies or music. One thing commonly stated was "I'm wanting to go to a real college." This response surprised me so I helped them process their feelings on the matter. After my second year at Bible college, I finished my undergraduate degree at a liberal arts college that my church created and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education with two minors, one in Psychology and the other in Business Administration. Additionally, after graduation, I pursued graduate degrees in Psychology.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients that like to utilize art as a part of their treatment interventions. As a depth psychologist, I believe in the power of imagination and creativity in the therapeutic encounter. It gives the client hints or hunches into the unconscious root of their problems. Once these instincts are revealed, the client will be able to address their problem consciously.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with clients that are introspective because it allows for true psychological transformation.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish that all clients knew that their unique problems are not the end-all-be-all of their lives. Rather, they can have a successful life by overcoming their hardships
What inspires you?
Many things inspire me. One example is the poet Rumi because he speaks about the richness of the human experience.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
During the first session, I will introduce myself to the client and give them the opportunity to ask me any questions they may have. I also have the client provide me with a more complete history of their presenting problem.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would like to accomplish introductions, history of presenting problem, and selection of treatment goals in the client's first session.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I would like clients to know that I have a vested interest in their success. I consider myself their companion on the road to psychological wholeness.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and friends. My wife and I have a dog and cat, and we enjoy playing with them. I also have a fondness for the outdoors and enjoy walking, finding it to be energizing. Travel is another one of my passions, as is reading, and playing video or board games.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
One thing that defines me is my persistence. This character virtue, along with the support of my family, has empowered me to thrive in life in spite of my stroke.
