Get to know Mary
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I have always been interested in human behavior; in why people do what they do. I have come to learn that one has much control over their destiny if they engage in honest and healthy behaviors. I enjoy helping others succeed in their life's quest.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with individual adults and couples who desire to better themselves and decrease symptoms of anxiety, depression, and shame.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Engaging in therapy can be scary. I am most excited to work with people who courageously enter therapy with the goal of making true changes in themselves and are willing to grow from their therapeutic experience.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
Making lasting behavioral changes takes time and comes in stages. While one can confront this task alone, few succeed without compassionate feedback and therapeutic guidance.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
My previous employers were large organizations with tremendous volumes of patients. Many were put on wait lists and the number of therapy sessions were limited due to the high volume of patients needed to be seen. Thriveworks operates differently. The availability of qualified clinicians makes access to therapeutic assistance timely. People enter therapy because they are in pain. They need help now!
What inspires you?
I am inspired by hard work and positive outcomes. Whether it be planting a garden, changing jobs, being in a relationship, raising a family.... all require appropriate tools and hard work to achieve a positive return.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
New clients can expect a nonjudgemental, compassionate listener who will quickly set a few therapeutic goals.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
New clients will come away with knowledge that they have an ally whose goal is to get them to a better place than they are currently.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
The German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche said, "That what does not kill you makes you stronger." This speaks to our resilience. In today's language, he would say something like, "Hang in there, it will get better." I would like potential clients to know that there is help available and things will get better.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
In my time off, I enjoy traveling, working in my garden, and power-walks with my crazy rescue dog, Kelsey.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Resourcefulness. I put MacGyver to shame.
