Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I left corporate American many years ago to become a teacher. I soon learned that young people were struggling with a multitude of issues that were more important than the subjects I taught. I took a crisis counselor position and earned my master’s degree. I worked for years in secondary education as a school counselor, but my heart was outside of the school system where I could provide meaningful therapy and help people learn to regulate their emotions effectively. I have been licensed over 20 years now and continue to love the work I do.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I have worked with a variety of clients over the years. I think that deciding to start therapy is a huge step in the healing process. I work to develop rapport with clients so that trust can build between us. I prefer working with adults who are dealing with obstacles or issues in their lives and are ready to initiate changes in their life.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
The most exciting clients to work with are those who have the awareness of the need for change and the willingness to make it happen.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish that clients knew they are stronger and more resilient than they think they are, that change takes time and patience, and it is important to prioritize yourself especially if other people depend on you.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I had heard of Thriveworks many years ago when I was in graduate school. They have been around a long time and that means something to me.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by the little things, such as people never giving up. I am inspired by honesty and people who are willing to help others. I am inspired by people who care for others, including animals, and by those who bring a little joy into everyday life.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In our first session together, we will complete an intake that provides a lot of background information that supports your wish to start therapy. I will be asking questions, but it is also a time for you to ask me questions as well about what to expect when working with me. My sessions are interactive, and my approach is down-to-earth with my clients.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
The first session is very important, and my main goal is to make the client feel comfortable and listened to. It is when we will start to build the therapeutic relationship, and it provides the critical framework for future sessions.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
Clients can be assured that I am a good listener, and I prefer a relaxed and casual approach to sessions. I encourage clients to meet with me in a comfortable setting, with privacy, and I want them to know I am approachable, have a good sense of humor, and will gently guide them through the process. Clients need to know that working with me provides a judgment-free zone and is a time for them to be themselves.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy a variety of things when I am not working. I moved to North Carolina 7 years ago and still have a lot of the state to explore. I enjoy time with friends and family, including taking my 12-and-a-half-year-old lab, Logan, on walks around the neighborhood. Every once in a while, I get inspired to cook something new often creating a meal on my own using a recipe as a suggestion!
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Doing the right thing is an attribute that defines me in all areas of my life.
