Why did you decide to become a counselor?
My story to becoming a therapist started as a child, with a clinical psychologist for a father. I spent 18 years telling him I'd never do what he does (I was going to be a marine scientist of course!). I spent my fair share of time in therapy offices, which is where I realized that I could actually be a great therapist. A few psychology classes in undergrad and I was hooked. Fast forward a decade and here we are!
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are ready to consider their life and changes they want to make. I am part of the queer community, and work well with those who are navigating the many challenges of personal acceptance.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I'm excited to work with all types of clients, but I have the most fun working with people who are ready to challenge themselves. Working with clients who like to incorporate art or other forms of processing is also an enjoyable process for me.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
A thing that I tell all of my clients at the start of our process: "change is on you, I can only say so much."
What inspires you?
As corny and canned as it sounds, I'm inspired by every person and story that I hear. I firmly believe I can learn from my clients just as much as they can learn from me.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
You can expect a couple of laughs, I know it can be awkward and uncomfortable to start therapy. I always do my best to create a warm and inviting space. We'll run through the basics of why you're there - but I recognize I need to earn your respect and trust before you can really talk about the big stuff going on. (And if I'm working from home, you might even get a peek of my cat - Spooky).
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In our first session we're just getting to know each other. I want to start to build respect and trust in the relationship and make sure we're a good fit.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Three important things: First, I am an out and proud queer person. I know how hard it is to navigate the process of internal acceptance and sharing that with the world. I am a safe space to navigate this narrative and practice being true to who you are. Second, I'm more than just a marriage and family therapist, I work with individuals as well. My approach (and training) is in looking at how we as individuals relate to our world in general. You don't need to have relationship problems to come see me, I am happy to work with you and your relationship with yourself. And third, I'm trained in expressive arts therapy. If you love art or sometimes feel stumped by words - I am the person for you!
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Typically, I enjoy getting outside and going to any body of water. I enjoy a good hike through the Eno River park or Umstead park. I will also find time to do creative adventures such as painting or crocheting. My partner also likes to remind me that I am an excellent chef and baker.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Outside of being a therapist, I am a creative soul and believe the process of art can cultivate growth beyond words.
