Get to know John

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I decided to become a therapist after realizing that the systems that people are involved in don't offer a lot of guidance like individual interventions could. A person centered approach to me, has always been more beneficial at helping people reach and maintain their goals.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I tend to be fairly laid back and easy going. I typically get along well with most people I see. Finding similarities tends to help build connections and we seem to have a better foundation after building that initial connection. I often pull in my own personal interests to try and make a connection, however Nerdy those interests may be.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I'm most excited to work with clients that have goals in mind and are ready to make changes within their lives. Enthusiasm for doing something to enrich your life and help you make positive changes is something that I love to see.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

One thing that I wish all clients knew and I try to inform them all is that therapy isn't a quick fix. These issues and problems didn't compound overnight so they won't be relieved overnight. Trust the process and remember, 20% of the work is completed in session while the other 80% is completed outside of the session by practicing the skills discussed.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to practice at Thriveworks to change things up both professionally and personally. Thriveworks will offer a certain level of freedom that will allow me to focus on self-care outside of work. I find it to be super important to take care of myself which in turn, will allow me to continue to care for others.

What inspires you?

Resilience and determination tend to inspire me. When I see clients who have been through so much already and they are still pushing themselves towards something better, it inspires me to do the same. People are my inspiration which is a good part of why I chose this profession.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

You can expect that your first session with me will be a lot of questions and getting to know each other a little bit. Knowing and understanding how each other thinks, will go a long way in building rapport and trust.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

The main thing that I want to accomplish in the first session is setting up a foundation for rapport. Starting with that connection will help us in building trust that will last for the future.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

One thing to keep in mind before scheduling a first session with me is that I use a lot of humor in therapy and I tend to be laid back. If you're okay with jokes, puns, and pop culture references, then we should get a long just fine.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy spending time with my wife, our daughter, and our dogs and cat. I love getting out and exploring an area that's new to me. I love hiking and getting outdoors when the weather is nice. On the flipside, I also enjoy some indoor activities such as building with LEGO, watching TV, and playing video games.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I think that my sense of humor and my ability to reframe a situation defines me. I have a talent of being able to find humor and positivity in desperate situations.
