Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I want to be a voice for challenging the narrative people seem to believe in the hope of illuminating the truth: mental illness should never be treated nor perceived any differently than how we treat and perceive physical health or illness. Mental health is health care.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I love working with clients who have experienced trauma. I find it massively fulfilling to be there to validate their experience and guide their understanding of their trauma. I offer clients the lens that they get to choose how they interpret their trauma and thus, can take ownership over their personal experience of the traumatic event(s). I have found this can be a remarkable way of reclaiming their trauma and empowering them in the process.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
No one can tell you how to feel when you are the person who experienced it.
What inspires you?
Stories inspire me. In many ways, counseling is storytelling. It is the client having revelations throughout their process, gradually challenging and changing the initial story they have been told- or have been telling themselves.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect conversation. I encourage clients to take their time to get to know me. I do not believe in power differentials. I believe clients are the experts in the counseling space. I am there to guide clients into tapping into existing resources they have always had, though perhaps, were never made aware of nor validated for. It is always within the client's right to decide whether a clinician is the right fit. Clients have every right to feel comfortable and safe with the counselor they select. I strive to provide that comfort and sense of safety for every person.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Before leaving a session, it is my hope we have taken the time to get to know one another on the most basic (and most pure) human level.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I love this work. Counseling is much more than a profession to me. I believe, to my core, therapeutic connection can change lives.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my dog, Maggie, being outside (weather permitting), writing, listening to classic rock, going on consignment shopping adventures, cycling, catching up with friends and making connections in the community.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I believe my lived experiences have given me the space to evolve into the person I am today. Experiences in my life now define me in the best way.
