About Jean
Jean Mitchell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 23 years of direct clinical services and social work business management experience in a variety of settings. These include community mental health, hospital-based crisis stabilization, long-term care, hospice, and substance use outpatient and residential treatment. Jean is credentialed/paneled with Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and most major private insurance companies. Jean places importance on working with a diverse population of individuals and has knowledge and experience that includes respect for, sensitivity to, and understanding of cultural differences. Jean's direct services practice areas are individual and group mental/behavioral health services, substance use treatment services, life skills coaching and education, LGBTQ+ issues (particularly working with transgender and gender fluid individuals), domestic violence, women's issues, adolescents (particularly girls), and grief and aging issues.
Jean is a graduate of the inaugural class (1997-1999) of the Joint MSW (JMSW) program at North Carolina A & T State University and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, where she received her MSW degree in 1999. Jean received a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in psychology and a minor in sociology at the University of Houston in 1996. It was Jean's own experience with mental/behavioral health issues that led her to social work and clinical therapy as a profession. This is a second career for Jean, as she worked in Business Management in the oilfield industry prior to making the decision to return to school to complete her Bachelor of Science and Master of Social Work degrees. Since receiving her MSW degree, Jean has worked in a variety of roles, including direct service and business management for public health and behavioral health organizations. Jean has experience in providing a broad range of treatment interventions including CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectical behavior therapy), motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy, narrative therapy, experiential therapy, and structured interventions.
At some point in life, most people face challenges that can make day-to-day functioning difficult, whether that be mental health, behavioral health, life stressors, loss, or grief. Jean's own life experience, coupled with her experience as a clinical therapist, makes her particularly suited to work with a diverse population of individuals. She does note that while she cannot "fix" you, she can work with you to help you identify your issues and find solutions to help you fix yourself. If you are ready to do that, schedule an appointment with her today!

"As a clinician with a wide scope of practice experience, and an individual living with a mental health disorder, I understand the importance of providing a balance of empathy, directness, positive regard, and the ability to teach the tools of coping skills to manage mental health symptoms and other stressors in order to thrive!"

Get to know Jean
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
After I experienced my own mental health crisis and recovery in the early 1990s, I decided that I wanted to become a clinician. At the time, I thought I was very unique. I discovered, fortunately, that I was not! I joined the community of clinicians and discovered that many have come to the profession this way!
What types of clients do you work with best?
I enjoy working with a wide variety of clients, particularly individuals who are motivated to make the changes that will improve their lives.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I really enjoy working with women who are experiencing life transitions, girls who are navigating the experience of adolescence, and transgender individuals who are in the process of transitioning.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That, with the right supports, self-knowledge, and ability to implement coping skills, you can not only increase your level of functioning, but you can learn to experience joy and comfort!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks allows me the opportunity to work with a diverse population of clients, and manage my own work/life balance which is essentially important to my capabilities as a clinician.
What inspires you?
I'm inspired by the progress that I see my clients make, whether that be small, incremental improvements, or profound moments of self-discovery.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect a warm welcome from someone who is genuinely interested in who they are as a person. I find people fascinating and everyone has a story!
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Introductions of both the client and therapist, determination of what goals they have for themselves in the context of treatment, and beginning exploration of how they would like their treatment to be provided.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I am empathetic, direct, funny (when appropriate!), accepting, and fascinated by people. I believe everyone has a story that deserves to be heard.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love spending time with my husband (we are newlyweds!), shopping for antiques, reading all kinds of books, hanging out with family and friends, and spoiling my almost 19-year-old cat!
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I embrace change! I'm not afraid of it, and in fact look for opportunities to change and grow all the time!
