About David

Life is hard. We all struggle with difficulties, doing so through the lens of our own thoughts, beliefs, and experiences. We all need help sometimes. David believes he will be capable of walking with you while you address life's difficulties and help you develop strategies and skills to help cope with those difficulties. Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I often tell people I am a counselor because I am not fit to do anything else. The truth is, I am a helper and people have always seems to find it easy to talk to me, to open up to me.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I think I work well with most anyone, but I would have to say that those who are introspective, curious, and interested in learning about themselves how they relate to the world are the ones I work best with. I also work well with reluctant clients as they often come to therapy with preconceived notions of what to expect and are often pleasantly surprised.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
The Serenity Prayer. Whether one is religious or not, I wish everyone focused more on trying to change what can be changed, accepting what cannot be changed, and were good at discerning the difference between those things.
What inspires you?
A beautiful sunset. Sunrise also, but that's too early. Family and friends. A client who sees and feels the positive change occurring in their lives. It is energizing to me.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
A conversation. There is information that obviously needs to be collected in a first session, but I try to approach that in as informal and relaxed way as possible. We will talk about what brought you here and what your goals are for therapy.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
The main thing is to have folks feel comfortable and that I am present with them.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I think that learning about ouselves and how to cope with life's difficulties is a really cool thing. Obviously there is a great deal of pain in life but that does not mean that therapy has to be painful. I believe it can often be a fun process.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I spend quality time with my wife, play tennis and golf, listen to music, and read.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
The same thing that defines me as a professional. Connection.
