About Carmen
I am a North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with over 20 years of counseling and human services experience. I offer assistance with mood disorders, social issues, relationship concerns, divorce recovery, personal growth issues, self-esteem, trauma, parenting issues, diversity/multicultural issues, women’s issues, adjustment challenges, and family of origin issues. I have a special interest in supporting parents of children who were born prematurely (or who are medically fragile) as well as those who have experienced challenging pregnancies. I also provide Christian counseling.
My therapeutic focus includes family system work; personal responsibility; exploring how values and beliefs impact goal setting; developing coping skills; and understanding how emotions and thoughts impact behavior and change. I believe therapy is cooperative and collaborative. The therapeutic process identifies, emphasizes, and utilizes personal resources.
I know that deciding to talk to a therapist can be both scary and empowering. If you are ready to take the next step in changing your life, please reach out. Perhaps I can help you in the next phase of your journey.

"My mission is to motivate people to create more balanced, authentic lives. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Counseling was a calling to help others live more meaningful and purposeful lives. I saw how easy it was to just exist and deal with day to day issues without really enjoying life. Being a fan of Thoreau, I wanted to live deeply, deliberately, and enjoy a full life. I offer that as my gift to the world.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I am excited to work with people who are open to learning more about themselves and how their lives impact the world around them.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I wish clients knew that therapy is essentially stopping what doesn't work (behaviors, attitudes, relationships, etc.) and replacing it with things that are more effective and healthy.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In the first session I am gathering information to see why a person is requesting therapy. I take notes and ask a lot of questions to understand the client and their situation. I provide information on what they can expect in working with me. I am looking in the first session to gather information and to begin understanding how I can be of help.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My relationship with God defines me and challenges me to be the best overall person I can possibly be. Learning, scholarship, education-no matter how I say it, I am inspired by the pursuit of knowledge. I am a student of life. Learning is like breathing for me, as is passing that knowledge on to others.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
A client's goals and personality shape how I work with them. My approach is eclectic because I don't believe that one size fits all.
