Get to know Asante

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

Mental Health has always been my passion! Growing up impoverished and an African American, mental health was something we didn't talk about. I made a choice to change that. I have always wanted to make a difference in the African-American community, and I knew I could do this by being a therapist that looks like my clients. I became a counselor so that more African Americans will know that it's okay to talk about mental health.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew that it's okay to not be okay, you're not alone!

What inspires you?

My family inspires me daily. Knowing the struggles that we faced in my childhood, inspire me to continue working in the mental health community.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Clients can expect to have judgement free and bias free sessions. Clients can also expect to have a safe space which will allow them to discuss any concerns while also not being forced to discuss issues they are uncomfortable with or that may cause emotional harm. Ultimately clients can expect to laugh, cry, hear the truth, and for the focus to be on them!

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to make clients comfortable and build a rapport in their first session. I want to ensure they are aware of the benefits and risks associated with therapy.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I utilize various treatment approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, etc. I focus on building a rapport with clients prior to engaging in depth in therapy, allowing for the clients to gain comfortability. I want to clients to know that I am human too and it's okay to not be okay!

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy spending time with my fiance, exercising, traveling, and eating some of my favorite foods!

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

One thing that defines me is beating the odds! I have been through a lot and I have overcome a lot! I was impoverished, raised by a single mother, evicted as a child, as well as several other things. I have overcome it all!
