Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I wanted to become a therapist because when I was younger I had a therapist who highly influenced my life. She helped me realize that their is a great deal of power in my story and that I could use my story and struggles to help other people realize their own strength. I enjoy seeing people grow and make changes that can benefit themselves and improve their life. Admitting that you need help, that you can't do this on your own, takes a lot of courage and I commend anyone who is willing to do that.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I feel I work best with teens and young adults who are struggling to cope with different challenges, transitions and other adjustments they have not experienced before.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with clients who are motivated to overcome their difficulties, learn about themselves and willing to work on getting themselves healthy again.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish everyone knew that they are not a burden and that they are enough just the way they are.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks because I felt like they aligned with my ethics, morals and personal characteristics with who I strive to be as a therapist.
What inspires you?
Seeing the potentional people have and watching them reach that or succeed farther. Knowing that there is hope for people to get better and live happy lives again.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I want clients to understand that this first meeting or any meeting is not going to be an interrogation. I want them to get a better understanding of who I am and what therapy is. This might be a time for us to identify goals, build rapport, gather information, or some people may want to dive right in. I am willing to go where you want to go with this time - it is up to you what you want to work on, I am not going to force you to discuss anything you don't want to or don't feel ready to.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to establish rapport, identify possible barriers, and educate about the therapeutic process.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am laid back, I enjoy humor and believe that laughter and can be healing. Therapy can cover serious topics, but everyone comes to therapy for different reasons and that's okay. I want client's to know they can trust me and I am not here to judge you, force you or pressure you. I am here to listen to you and walk beside you through this process.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy reading, watching movies, completing puzzles, fishing and working out.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Something that I think defines me is being different or unique from others.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
There was a young girl I worked with previously that struggled with major depression and non-suicidal self injury. She engaged in this behavior frequently and did not feel like it was something that would ever change or improve. During our time together I was able to help her find healthier coping skills, develop better communication and improve her self esteem. While doing these things, she eventually stopped engaging in self harming behaviors and started to see a significant increase in her mood. She was able to understand the why behind these thoughts/emotions/behaviors and stop herself from engaging in maladaptive/destructive behaviors.
