Hello, my name is Michael Egan and I hold a BSW from Michigan State University and an LMSW from Grand Valley State University. I specialize in helping adults struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and relationship issues. My treatments tend to focus on understanding root causes, reducing emotional distress, and building practical coping skills.
I specialize in EMDR therapy and trauma-informed care for adults with trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and relationship concerns. I integrate EMDR, CBT, DBT, and mindfulness to support healing and growth. I offer in-person therapy throughout Kent County, plus online therapy throughout Michigan and, when permitted, other states, in a compassionate space.
I bring 20 years of experience in mental health, working with adults across hospital, community, inpatient and outpatient mental health settings. My background includes trauma, crisis, addiction, anxiety, depression, and family systems using a trauma-informed care approach.

"I've spent much of my career helping people navigate some of life's most difficult moments, and Ive learned that one of the most important things we can offer another person is a place where they feel genuinely heard and understood."
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I believe in making the world a better place by serving others. When I was growing up, I went on service trips through my school when I was 14 and 15 to Oaxaca Mexico to help build houses for the Zapotec Indians which was a life changing experience that humbled me and taught me that people in the world need help. The services that we were able to provide were something that I put me on the path that I still walk to this day, one that aims to always help those in need in hopes to make things better for society by giving back.
What types of clients do you work best with?
The clients I work best with are those that are ready and willing to be open with their problems in a safe and healing environment.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
Therapy is not linear which is the hardest part. It does provide a relationship that comes with unconditional positive regard which is non-judgement and facilitates opportunity for empowerment, growth, and healing.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
During our first session, we'll focus on getting to know one another in a trauma-informed care setting. I will create a safe and supportive environment where you can begin sharing your story at your own pace. We'll explore what brings you to therapy, discuss goals and expectations and collaboratively develop a treatment approach that meets your needs.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
I come from a multicultural background with a mother who immigrated from Mexico. I have a background teaching martial art, specifically Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to both men and women for nearly 4 years. I have personal experience healing and benefitting from EMDR therapy which helped me with past medical trauma.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Everyone is a unique individual and by knowing this I make sure that my approach to working with each of my clients is tailored to their individual needs, comforts, and personalities.
