About Melanie

Hi! My name is Melanie Krieg. I earned my master's in Counseling Psychology at Western Michigan University in 2009. I have post-master's training in trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), multi-systems therapy (MST), ADHD, and anxiety. My focus and interests are in ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, parenting, foster care, bipolar disorder, school issues, anger management, and more.

My goal is for my clients to feel safe and able to open up about what brought them to therapy and make the changes they want. I take an eclectic approach: CBT, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, DBT skills, and play, art, and psychodynamic therapy. I meet people where they are and use what fits their needs. I'm laid-back but know when to be direct.

Making the first step to getting started with counseling is not always easy. It can be scary and anxiety-provoking. Talking to a stranger about your personal business can be weird and uncomfortable. I will do my best to put you at ease and make the decision worth it. I look forward to helping you on your journey to a healthier, happier self.

Get to know Melanie

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I decided to be become a counselor after I found myself benefiting from having someone to talk to about my problems while growing up.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

There does not have to be anything "wrong" with you to come to counseling. Therapy is about approving your overall wellbeing and trying to be the best person you can be.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

The first session will include basic information on confidentiality and how I work. It will include questions about what brings you to therapy including your strengths. You will be able to ask me questions that you may have about the process. After the first session, we will start developing goals you would like to accomplish from coming to therapy. You are the guide. Rapport will be established early on through validation, active listening, humor and getting to know each other.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I meet people where they are at. We explore goals together and I encouraged feedback at every session. Based upon what you want from therapy and your current struggles, we will come up with a plan together.
