Why did you decide to become a counselor?
For the longest time I thought I wanted to be a teacher. I loved the idea of working with children and helping them grow. The more I understood teaching the more I learned that children struggle with mental health issues, family problems, and there is so much more behind the scenes that they need help with. So, I decided that I would take the path of possibly being a school counselor. Once I finally started interning to see what this world looked like, I realized many of the kids struggled with issues connected to their parents. There was a lot of substances abuse, generational trauma, and mental illness that was going untreated. After gaining more experience I found that I actually loved working with adults to help them learn how to live more fulfilling and healthier lives.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I have the most experience working with clients that have co-occurring substance use disorders and mental illness. I have found that many of these people also have a history of trauma and are struggling to find ways to make peace with their past and cope with life without engaging in substance use. However, I also enjoy working with individuals that have issues with anxiety or depression and need help managing their symptoms on a day to day basis.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I get excited about working with people that have a good sense of humor, have curious minds and are eager to learn more about their mental health, and put in an honest effort to make changes in their life and can admit that they are struggling when they are. I really value honesty from my clients and respect for the professional boundaries of the counselor and client relationship.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish that all of my clients knew how important they are and that no matter what has happened to them in the past, they are worth so much more than whatever their problems may be.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I decided to practice at Thriveworks because they appear to be a wonderful company to work for that truly vales their employees. Everyone I've met from the company has been incredibly kind and helpful and this is not something you can find at every job. I really appreciate all they have to offer.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by new experiences. I love visiting a new place, restaurant, or shop just to experience the wonder that comes from being somewhere unfamiliar. I have found that traveling, if even just to a new coffee shop in my city, is fun and gives me the fuel I need to keep going.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In our first session you can expect to learn the limits and extents of client confidentiality, reviewing your expectations of therapy, we will create a treatment plan so that we have some goals of what to focus on in our sessions, and we will have plenty of time to talk about what brought you to therapy and where you expect to be by the time you are complete with your treatment.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In our first session I would like to accomplish building a solid rapport with you so that we are at a point where we trust each other and can begin to work on your presenting problem and begin making progress in therapy.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Counseling isn't as simple as just talking to a clinician on demand. The process to getting help is much more complex than simply talking to a professional whenever you want. When you make your first phone call you will have an intake, schedule an assessment, and then have your very first counseling appointment. It may take a handful of sessions before you start to really see changes and although professionals are there to guide you, you will only get out of counseling the effort that you put into it. It takes hard work, it can be awkward at times, but anything worth having is worth working for.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy singing, drawing with my quill and ink pens, journaling, exploring the city, spending quality time with my family/friends, and excessively watching interesting TV shows on Netflix (when I have the time to do so).
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My actions define who I am as a person. I am an incredibly genuine person and I do my best to give my utmost respect to all of my clients because I never know exactly what someone else is going through and I really believe in the cliché, "kill them with kindness". There is so much stigma in the world of mental health and addiction that the last thing I want to do is judge my clients and make them feel worse. Even in my personal life I make sure all of my family and friends feel welcome and safe and comfortable if they ever need to talk about something that might be hard to discuss. In a world where people tend to talk more than they listen I really value being a listener that seeks to understand others, and not listening just to reply.
