About Provider

About Colette

Colette Spaulding is a Licensed MSW and has worked for 20 years in the mental health field. She views each client as a whole person, taking a client-centered approach and collaborating with them to match interventions with their particular needs. She has worked with survivors of abuse, domestic violence, and trauma, as well as clients with mood disorders, anxiety and depression, grief, relationship issues, and major life transitions. She utilizes multiple treatment modalities including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT); Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as psychodynamic, relational, and existential therapy strategies.

Colette completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) at the University of Michigan. Her professional experience includes working with culturally diverse populations in urban and rural settings, with a wide variety of mental health issues and challenges. This, coupled with her innate empathy and non-judgmental stance, enables her to provide her clients with the support and guidance they are seeking.

Colette asks, "What has happened to you?" rather than, "What is wrong with you?" She knows how important it is to establish a safe and compassionate space for her clients to share their unique stories. She will work with you to weave together elements of patterns, strengths, and coping skills; to increase self-awareness, improve your relationships, and promote the healing and growth you desire, to become the best version of you!

"Sometimes it’s hard to reach out for help when life gets difficult! I'm so glad you did, because there are times when you need someone to support and encourage you, hold your concerns and problems in a safe space, and help you work towards fulfillment and peace of mind."

Get to know Colette

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

That's a hard question to answer! It's kind of like a fish being asked "why do you swim?" All my life I was told "you're too sensitive!" and that sounded like a criticism for the longest time. But as a therapist, I think it's an asset. The world is full of difficulties and pain, but also there is joy, purpose, and contentment; I hope to help my clients connect to that aspect of life. Also, I'm very curious and I love to get to know people and hear their stories. Everyone has a unique story to tell!

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

They offer an opportunity to reach a wide range of people who need mental health help and support, as well as providing positive energy, tools, and supports to their therapists -- so that we can become better therapists!

What inspires you?

Curiosity, about pretty much everything. And moments of connection, with clients, friends, family, nature, music, movement, so many things!

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Interest, respect, curiosity and openness, compassion. I take a non-judgmental stance; I want to understand where my client is coming from and what they feel they need.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I think every client has different questions, and hopefully will find what they need by looking at my profile, but if not I am open to answering any questions prior to a first session.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I read A LOT. Mostly mysteries/thrillers, and non-fiction of all kinds. I cook -- love to prepare meals for family and friends. Lately I have taken up rollerskating, which is kind of terrifying but really fun. I watch the wildlife in my backyard, and watch my cats watching the wildlife. In my family we are all into music and share songs and artists with each other. Also there are frequent spontaneous dance parties. I go for long walks and listen to podcasts. And I love to sleep late any chance I get.
