About Sam
Samantha (Sam) Prescott is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) who has 7 years of experience in the mental health field, including in-home family work, crisis intervention, and clinical outpatient with diverse populations. Throughout Sam’s clinical experience she has addressed depression, anxiety, trauma, relationships, self-esteem, and substance misuse with individuals, couples, and families.
Sam completed her bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Arizona State University and her Master of Science (MS) in Mental Health Counseling at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
Sam emphasizes the importance of collaboration within counseling and welcomes an atmosphere of fluid feedback to help make the most of your therapy experience. She will help you see the resiliency within yourself. Sam will provide a tailored experience to help address goals to help facilitate an improved quality of life, utilizing solution-focused therapy to change internal narratives from problem-focused to strength-building. Sam believes that each individual, couple, or family holds the ability to build the necessary skills to become their own therapist. She hopes to provide these skills through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and psychoeducation.

"Hello there! Starting something new can be scary, but with some teamwork and collaboration we can accomplish some amazing things."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided I wanted to become a counselor when I was in high school (yes the passion has been there for a long time!). I always felt like more of a listener when I hung out in social situations but also balanced appropriate feedback when needed (who knew this was called empathy at this point). However, the thing that keeps me continuing along the counseling path is the positive changes I see people experience through their own internal work. Those A-HA moments are the best!
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with curious individuals who are willing to have an open and real conversation. I also enjoy the clients who may not "like" therapy but are willing to give it another shot.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
My passion is with working with couples and adolescents. However, I love to have clients that challenge me in a creative way (for example: talking might not be your thing but maybe listening to music and pulling some lyrics might be).
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
That therapy cannot be a one way street, it needs to be a joint contribution (aka take those skills and perspectives discussed in therapy and apply them outside of session, you will be surprised at some of the outcomes).
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I've heard multiple great things about Thriveworks and wanted to continue my counseling experience under a company that has positive reviews. Positive work environments make a difference. I'm also really INTO knowing I have team surrounding me so I am able to hear different ideas/ approaches.
What inspires you?
Music, I think they are so many creative outlets when using music. Also, I think doing/ trying new things. Some of the most refreshing experiences have been the ones you did not expect to have by willing to try something different.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
You can expect a LOT of energy, warmth, compassion, and humor. It's hard to meet with a stranger to initially start discussing those challenging things, so we start off working on building a relationship where a safe space is established.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I like to get a sense of goals (aka the miracle question, oh yes look it up), what has worked in the past, and expectations (what do you expect from therapy/ what do you expect from yourself/ what do you expect from me).
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I bring a lot of energy to my sessions along with humor. I strive to help others build insight within themselves through the use of curiosity.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I LOVE to dance... I dance in front of my 4 month old daughter who does not provide much critique so I must be good, right?
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My constant laughing and upbeat personality.
