About Makayla
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 16 years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families through life’s challenges. I have worked in inpatient, outpatient, and hospital settings, as well as group living environments. My goal is to help people live with more intention and less out of habit by focusing on creating meaningful, balanced, and fulfilling lives. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, personality disorders, addiction, OCD, autism, and grief.
I earned my Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from Rhode Island College. My approach is person-centered and integrative, drawing from cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy, and psychoeducation to help clients gain insight, develop coping skills, and promote long-term healing and growth.
I believe therapy is not one-size-fits-all. My focus is to help you understand your thoughts, beliefs, and patterns while building on your unique strengths. Together, we’ll explore new perspectives, reduce triggers, and cultivate self-awareness. You’ve already taken the first step toward healing—let’s build the life you deserve.

"As a biracial woman who has faced personal trauma and loss, I’ve transformed my pain, anger, and grief into resilience, learning that broken crayons still color, reclaiming my power as the author of my own story, and using that strength to help others build healing and coping skills of their own."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I have always loved helping people - it is my passion and calling in life. I have found that if you are authentic and genuine people have an easier time trusting and opening up – my motto is - always be you, you look beautiful like that. I have always been willing to sit and listen without judgment when someone is in need and help where I could. I knew at a young age this was my dream and have been perusing it ever since. In my family I am the glue, the mediator, and the moderator
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
Therapy is a journey that takes time, consistency, and dedication, but done correctly yields the most incredible results. There is nothing too big or too small that some form of therapy cannot assist with. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you but if you’re not willing to learn, no one can help you.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
The first therapy session is a get to know you session. I will introduce myself and share some of my background. We will review the policies and discuss what brought you to therapy, get some background information, and discuss a path. The first few sessions are for you to learn my therapy style and see if it fits what you are looking for. Does my energy match yours? Am I someone you feel you can be honest with? Your comfortability and feelings on our compatibility are the most important pieces for a successful and meaningful journey. This is about you and only you, you are your best advocate
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
In the first few sessions as I get to know you, I will begin tailoring your sessions to match your needs. Therapy is always person centered otherwise it doesn't work. Thus, I will use techniques and practices that align with your goals, personality, and comfortability. We will work together to create a path that is unique for you.
