Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I choose counseling as a natural evolution of my social work training, as I learned during my early years providing casework that those clients who became emotionally healthy and self-aware fared far better when presented with life's challenges. I furthered my education with an eye to this as a way to sustain effective problem solving - whatever the cause.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Adults who have access to technology for Zoom calls. I enjoy meeting and working with folks who are working on self-improvement, health issues, relationships, and addiction recovery. I have a fierce sensitivity to those recovering rom racial trauma and its impact.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I have enthusiasm for working with clients who have capacity to rethink beliefs, who are open minded, who are willing to explore alternative solutions through respectful, challenging, and supportive discussions.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Shame dies when stories are told in a safe place.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I was intrigued by Thriveworks' philosophy, structure and no waiting lists! I also was impressed by their careful vetting of clinical staff and their supervision and support programs for therapists.
What inspires you?
The work of contemporary clinicians who dare to change the status quo-- people such as Brene Brown, MSW, Ph.D. whose research on shame, vulnerability, courage and empathy are endorsements of principles I value.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients should expect a respectful encounter in a shame-free setting where you will be supported to identify three initial treatment goals. Also, we will discuss the housekeeping details - scheduling, contact information, etc. The third and most important issue will involve your emotional safety and ways to maintain it so you can not only survive, but thrive in the process.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Listen and respond to individual needs. Explain the treatment process, explore your background and learn what has and what has not worked for you in the past. I will explain the treatment process but will mostly listen to you.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
My sessions are conducted in a secure, respectful, and HIPAA-compliant setting. Your confidentiality is my utmost concern. My documentation, to satisfy both insurance requirements, and for my reference for your progress moving forward in treatment, is noted with as few intrusive and identifying notes as possible. Privacy is primary! Trust is earned.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I volunteer at The Spanish American Center, Inc., an important local non-profit social service agency in Leominster, MA, As a member of their dedicated Board of Directors. I put my creativity and love of hispanic culture and people to work as editor of the Center's popular newsletter, "El Amanecer" (The Sunrise), webmaster for their busy web site: www.spanishamericancenter.org, and social media editor for their Linkedin and Facebook pages. I don't speak Spanish but the wonderful opportunity to engage in this vibrant culture is so appealing- as is the music, dance and cuisine.
