About Provider

About Aminata

I am a master’s-level counselor with 8 years of experience supporting children, teens, and adults through anxiety, depression, chronic stress, low self-esteem, relationship challenges, burnout, and major life transitions. I provide a compassionate, nonjudgmental space where clients can explore difficult emotions, gain clarity, and begin creating meaningful, lasting change.

I earned my Master of Science in counseling from Salem State University. My professional training includes cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, and trauma-informed care. I tailor treatment to each client’s needs, helping them build insight, emotional awareness, and practical coping skills.

You do not have to have everything figured out to begin therapy. If you are feeling overwhelmed or uncertain, that is okay. I will meet you where you are and work alongside you to strengthen resilience, reconnect with your strengths, and move toward a more fulfilling life.

"As a person of color, I understand the importance of feeling seen, heard, and culturally understood in therapy, and I am committed to creating a safe, affirming space where you can show up fully as yourself."

Get to know Aminata

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I was raised in a culturally conservative, authoritarian household in which emotional expression was limited and parenting practices emphasized discipline, obedience, and control. Over time, I came to understand that my parents’ approaches were shaped by their cultural background, upbringing, and lived experiences. Following the loss of my father, I experienced significant emotional distress that was largely misunderstood within my family, particularly by my mother. In my cultural context, mental health concerns were often minimized, with an emphasis placed on strength, prayer, and perseverance rather than emotional support or psychological care.

Following this significant life event, interactions with social workers and therapists were pivotal. These professionals provided a space where my experiences were validated and approached with empathy and understanding. Feeling seen and heard during this time had a profound impact on my healing process and ultimately sparked my interest in psychology and counseling. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to supporting others through compassionate, culturally informed mental health care.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with individuals who have mood disorders and experienced grief, loss, or significant life transitions, particularly those from culturally diverse or traditionally conservative backgrounds. I am especially effective with clients who may have grown up in environments where emotional expression or mental health support was limited. I value creating a safe, empathetic space where clients feel heard, validated, and supported as they navigate healing and self-understanding.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

One thing I wish all clients knew is that healing is not linear. Progress often includes setbacks, pauses, and moments of discomfort, and none of these mean therapy isn’t working. Growth happens gradually through patience, self-compassion, and consistency. Needing support is not a sign of weakness, but an act of strength. Emotional pain deserves care and attention, regardless of cultural expectations around strength or resilience. Healing comes from developing insight, building coping skills, and learning to relate to oneself with greater awareness and acceptance over time.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

In the first session, clients can expect a welcoming, supportive space where the focus is on getting to know them as a whole person. We will talk about what brought them to therapy, their goals, and any concerns they may have. I prioritize building trust and ensuring clients feel heard, respected, and comfortable moving at their own pace.

In the early stages of therapy, we focus on establishing safety, developing rapport, and gaining a deeper understanding of the client’s experiences. Together, we begin identifying patterns, strengths, and areas for growth while collaboratively setting goals for the work ahead.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I tailor therapy by meeting each client where they are and collaborating with them to understand their goals, values, cultural background, and lived experiences. Treatment is not one-size-fits-all; I continuously adapt interventions based on the client’s needs, strengths, and progress while honoring their pace and preferences.
