I’m Janice Horton, a 26-year Licensed Professional Counselor in Shreveport, LA, providing services locally, regionally, and nationally. My services have reached those age 7 and up with concerns ranging from anxiety, depression, child abuse, self-esteem, divorce, grief, military families, life transitions, careers, and trauma, provided inpatient, outpatient, in home, and in school and community settings. My licenses include Licensed Professional Counselor/Supervisor-LA, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-LA, National Certified Counselor, Board Certified Life Coach, EMDR Trained, and Licensed Professional Counselor for Texas.

I enjoy exploring the life journey with my clients. I understand the importance of meeting you where you are through a person-centered approach, while transitioning when needed to address barriers keeping you from moving forward. My techniques include EMDR for traumatic events and cognitive-behavioral techniques to change your thoughts and behaviors.

You have already taken the first step by researching your options to connect with a licensed therapist, and I applaud you for that. Make sure you align with someone who meets your needs—it’s ok to start over if it doesn’t work. “If I can help somebody then my living will not be in vain.” I look forward to helping you have “Better day for a Brighter Future.”

"As an African American female in the South, I bring to the table a wealth of understanding the importance of breaking barriers to heal the whole person no matter your race, creed, color, age, socioeconomic status, or disparities."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I have been intrigued by Psychology and all of its components since I took a course in high school my junior year. This led me to pursue a Psychology degree and then streamlined into the field of counseling as my focal point to address human behavior from all aspects.

What types of clients do you work best with?

My favorite category of clients are preteens-21 and then single women.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

Everyone goes through something and everyone needs someone to help them go through it.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

During our initial sessions, we will discuss what brought you to seek therapy at this time, complete necessary assessments, and begin to put in place alternatives that will allow you to move forward in a freer mindset about your decisions.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

I have had used a therapist during a crucial time period in my life. Taking this step even as a therapist reminded me of the necessity to tap into the resources that I ask others to use.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

When speaking with clients, I allow them to paint the picture of their life on a blank canvas. I intentionally do not categorize them into a certain technique but allow their story to unfold with necessary tools along the way. I know that I am only here to listen and lend options but the client has to LIVE it daily.
