Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Counseling felt like it was decided for me, by my community and by life itself. I originally went to college to study Medical Technology and later considered pursuing a master’s degree in history and African Studies. But when I decided to return to school for a graduate degree, I had to ask myself a deeper question: What am I truly good at?
At the time, I was working as a laboratory assistant and phlebotomist at a local hospital. Something kept happening that made me pause and reflect. People would come into the lab, and, without any prompt, they would start talking to me about their lives, their problems, their joys, and struggles. By the time they left, I often knew their story. I realized how much I enjoyed these conversations. Not just listening, but thinking about how I could support them, even in small ways.
It was not just that people were drawn to me. I was drawn to them. That is when it became clear that counseling was not just something I could do but it was something I was already doing. All I needed was the training and the framework to turn that gift into a profession. That is how I became a counselor.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
How important they are to themselves and others.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I heard that Thriveworks truly cares about those that need mental health services and able to bring the services to the client's home through telehealth or the office. It's important to me to work for a company that can provide services to help everyone rather they can drive to the office or not.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Empathy and compassion.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Read, watch movies, travel, and hang out with my grandchildren.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am caring.
