Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor my freshman year of college. I had always been interested in psychology (which was my major already), but wasn’t sure what route to take for my career. After experiencing a difficult time, I sought help through a counselor at my school and it wasn’t what I had expected. I’m that moment, I decided that I would be a counselor and I’d be there for those who needed extra support, without judgement. I vowed that I’d be understanding, kind, and validate their personal experiences…I’d be the counselor I had wanted.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients that are willing to be open and honest. It can be challenging to be that way, and for those who have never done therapy before, it can seem scary…but that’s how the work gets done. Being willing to be vulnerable during our sessions will help us to build rapport and trust, so we can have those tough conversations, figure out what your vision is for your ideal health/wellness, and start working on your therapeutic goals.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Everyone! I am excited to meet people from all walks of life. No matter what culture or community you identify with, I am eager to get to work together and am committed to acknowledging all facets of what makes you uniquely you. Your gender identity, your race/ethnicity, your culture, etc. these all make up who you are and I am here as a nonjudgmental ally, who wants to help you reach your goals.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That there is no shame or judgement in going to therapy! We all go through rough times and sometimes it’s more than we know how to handle, or we don’t have all the tools we need to overcome…that’s okay. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking some help. It’s actually incredibly smart, brave, and admirable that you can recognize that you need some extra support and that you’re able to take it.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at because I really appreciate that they prioritize therapy and are client-centered. They handle all of the logistical stuff, so that I can do what I do best, which is provide therapy and put my clients first. They also offer a wonderful amount of support for continuing to grow professionally and clinically within my field.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In the first session, you can expect for it to be pretty relaxed. I like to focus on getting to know one another better and really build our therapeutic relationship. I’ll ask about what brought you here, what you’d like to get out of our time together, and more. These questions are going to help us start to flesh out some therapy goals, and they can give me a lot of important information about what your life is like and what challenges you’re currently facing. There is never any pressure to over-past what you’re comfortable with, as it is the first session. You are also free to ask me any follow up questions you may have, about my education/experience, about what therapy might look like, etc.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I’m genuinely here for you. I’ll never pressure you to go at a pace that isn’t comfortable or manageable for you. I will always validate your feelings and experiences, encourage you, sometimes challenge you, appreciate you, and ensure that each session is a space where you are heard and accepted.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I’ve got two toddlers, so during my time off, you can find me playing outside with them, going to the zoo or the Children’s Museum, or doing anything active and kid friendly. When I have some time to myself, I enjoy reading a good suspenseful novel, binge-watching whatever tv show I’m currently watching, or doing yoga. I also love to cook, so I’m always trying out a new recipe!
