About Stephanie
Stephanie A. Haywood is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) who specializes in treating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, women's issues, and narcissism in individuals, couples, and families. Stephanie has over 20 years of experience in the mental health field, working extensively with survivors of trauma and helping others cope through life's everyday challenges.
Stephanie completed her bachelor’s degree at Marquette University and her master’s degree in Community Counseling at Loyola University, Chicago. She is proud to be a Christian and believes that God has gifted her to do this kind of work.
Stephanie seeks to work with you toward meeting your goals and working through your painful experiences. She has found that most people don't seek help when they first need it because they believe they can "do it" themselves. Society would dictate that you embrace DIY culture, but Stephanie believes that God never meant for anyone to go it alone. Being a good listener is the first step in being able to engage others and truly connect on a deeper level. Stephanie has the ability to connect in such a way that brings comfort to clients when they first meet her.

"As an African American Christian woman, I bring warmth and empathy along with a unique way to explore any issues, having had experiences along with expertise that shaped my thinking."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I found myself being the resident "listener" in my college dorm. This led me to declare a major in psychology and the rest is history.
What types of clients to you work with best?
I work best with adults who are willing to be vulnerable and allow themselves to explore their life looking for answers. I have worked with people who experience depression, anxiety, childhood trauma, grief and loss, relationship issues, just to name a few.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with most clients. Regardless of why they are seeking counseling, I think it's courageous to take the step to reach out for help and that is exciting in and of itself. This means they are ready to tackle something they may have held onto for a long time.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
That they are not the only one who has been or is going through their problems.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by God and the spiritual aspects of my life. To have a relationship with God keeps me grounded and focused on caring for others including family and friends. Listening to stories of others' successes and being around the family of God inspires me to be better and to grow.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
During the first session, clients can expect me to be open and listen to them. I always let clients know that they can feel free to ask me any questions and that I offer listening with no judgment and lots of empathy. I truly care about the presenting problem and most clients say they felt connected instantly.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
My main goal in the first session is to understand as much as possible what brought them to counseling at this time. The reason for stressing at this time is because people may have dealt with issues for weeks or months or years, but I want to know what prompted them to reach out for help now as opposed to any other time.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to workout at the health club, go to movies, bowling, walking by the lakefront on a warm day. I also like talking to friends and just relaxing with a good book.
