About Provider

About Joseph

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) with 10 years of experience, and more than 6 years of experience working as a therapist. Prior to working as a professional counselor, I provided clinical case management to individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues in a variety of settings. I am passionate about helping individuals who are striving to overcome issues like depression, anxiety, life transitions, anger, self-destructive behavior (substance use, self-sabotage, etc.), and existential crises.

I completed my Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Walden University and my Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Marquette University. I take a strength-based approach with each client, utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in my care.

As a counselor who has been influenced by the work of Dr. Viktor Frankl, I place emphasis on helping clients to create meaning in the midst of difficult circumstances in order to turn tragedies into triumphs. If you are ready to explore how you can best respond to your current challenges, schedule an appointment with me today.

"I am inspired by the resilience of the human spirit. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "What lies before you and what lies behind you are tiny matters compared to what lies WITHIN you." I strive to help clients realize how much potential they have within them to face and overcome the difficulties of life."

Get to know Joseph

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I was attracted to helping others at a young age and my personal experience witnessing loved ones struggle with mental health issues inspired me to pursue a career as a counselor. While it may seem cheesy, I found the movie Good Will Hunting to be inspirational and it reinforced my desire to help others find their way. As I was studying psychology as an undergraduate student between freshman and sophomore year, the words in Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning further validated my drive to help others through talk therapy.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I work best with clients who recognize their quality of life is less than what they are capable of experiencing and are willing to accept guidance to develop and pursue solutions to their problems.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am most excited to work with clients who are willing to embrace the process and apply themselves in order to experience the personal gains they aspire to achieve.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew how much potential they have within them.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

Thriveworks provides opportunities for me to use the gifts I have been given, apply the skills I have honed, and work/life balance to meet my needs professionally and personally as a husband and father.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the resilience of the human spirit.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Clients can expect me to provide undivided attention while being accepting and nonjudgmental so I may be able to accurately assess, diagnose, and develop individualized treatment plan goals as part of a collaborative effort with them.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

Establish a warm, empathic, person-centered relationship while accurately assessing, diagnosing, and treatment planning with them.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I am determined to devote myself to improving their overall well-being through a person-centered, action-oriented approach and I will hold them accountable to follow through with goals established session-to-session.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I have a wide range of interests, but I spend a lot of my time with my family and friends. I enjoy staying active through running, weightlifting, obstacle courses/organized races, and recreational sports. I also enjoy reading, watching TV, watching sports, and watching movies. While I have yet to pick up an instrument, I find music to be both enjoyable and therapeutic. I also draw strength from being an active member of my church and engaging in spiritual activities such as reading Scripture and listening/participating in praise and worship. I do not do it enough, but I love traveling (domestically and outside the country) when I get opportunities to do so.
