Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a clinician because I was (and still am) very passionate about access to care. Growing up on the South- Side of Chicago, mental health care was not readily available or even recommended to us in schools or by neighborhood leaders. I am passionate about making sure all marginalized populations have access to care and understand the realities of mental health, not just cultural stigmas. This also influenced my teaching. As a University Professor at Chicago State University, I am passionate about making sure I help bring forth the next generation of culturally competent clinicians. Clinicians who are able to serve the entire community, no matter the race, sexual identity, or ability.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I value collaboration. I work best with clients who may be unsure as to why they sought therapy to begin with or even client who know why they sought support all together. As long as a client is open and willing to explore, then the hardest part is check, done- you showed up.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I value collaboration. I work best with clients who may be unsure as to why they sought therapy to begin with or even client who know why they sought support all together. As long as a client is open and willing to explore, then the hardest part is check, done- you showed up.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that therapy is not like what you see on television. Therapy is hard work. It is hard work trying to build self-awareness so that you can apply skills to live a more healthy and consistent life. Therapy is interactive, you will do work outside of therapy that challenges you to think and take a long hard look at yourself.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice with Thriveworks because I value independence and flexibility as a clinician. Most importantly, again, I value access and I am able to treat more individuals who live in different states through Thriveworks. Thriveworks also provides psychiatric care, which is not the easiest to access. Having a team in one place is very easy for clients and can take the stress off of moving through different professionals and referrals through PCPs.
What inspires you?
Cultural competence and access to care inspires me. Seeing my clients and students flourish, gain insight, and self awareness- finding the "ah ha" moments gives me joy.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Aside from the general intake questions you have to ask in any first session with a therapist, clients can expect a nonjudgemental and open space to just be. Be ready to explore, be ready to laugh, or even cry. Be ready to show up for yourself.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I aim to understand your goals and your needs. I aim to understand a bit about your life story and what brought you to where you are today.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I value collaboration. I work best with clients who may be unsure as to why they sought therapy to begin with or even client who know why they sought support all together. As long as a client is open and willing to explore, then the hardest part is check, done- you showed up.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy running with my running, yoga, hiking, and strength training. I enjoy spending time with my partner and family, as I am (finally) a new auntie. I enjoy engaging in the community whether through church volunteering or workout group classes with social clubs.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My dedication and discipline.
