Get to know Kelly
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I have known I wanted to be a counselor since I was 12 years old! I was the go to for my friend group whenever there was an issue or a problem and once I realized I could make a career out of supporting and encouraging others, I knew I had found my path!
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am always excited to work with a client who is motivated to evolve and change. That doesn't mean that we don't have a sense of nervousness/fear about changing, it simply means we are open to seeing what might come next and we are willing to continue on DESPITE the fear!
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Plain and Simple, that you are Worthy and Lovable JUST THE WAY YOU ARE, even before you make one change.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I love the idea of balance. I refer to this concept throughout my work with clients. I sincerely feel that I need to practice what I preach. Working at Thriveworks allows me to be able to work towards that work/life balance that I know is so important.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by peaceful, kind, calm experiences. I always have so much going on around me, so when I have a minute to be still and quiet, maybe take a walk, or have a moment by myself, this is inspiring to me. To balance that out, I also find inspiration in setting an example for my children. Showing them how to continue on despite unexpected curveballs.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I like to use this opportunity to gather history and establish expectations. I also like to use this time for you to tell me what you are wanting and hoping for during our time working together. What brought you here and what is your "Vision" for our work? How will you know that your time here has been beneficial? That is your Vision and it is important to me to know and hear this from you!
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In addition to gathering history and understanding your Vision, I also want to establish 1-2 goals for treatment and make sure we both understand what we are focusing on.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I want to make sure that anyone who works with me understands that you are more than just your issue or struggle that brought you here. I want you to know that I don't have all the answers and this journey we are starting is a process. Together we can make a plan to work towards your goals.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love taking walks and ever since the pandemic I have realized that getting outside for fresh air is even more important that I ever knew! I also love to go to the gym, support my kids in their activities (swim and tennis) and I am also ready to start reading more again (now that 3 out of 4 kids can drive I am not carpooling as much!)
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Being a mother and an encourager is what I hope most defines me. I am a very imperfect parent, however I try every day to role model how to handle life's inevitable ebb & flow.
