Hello, I'm Jessica Peterson, an Associate Professional Counselor (APC) at Thriveworks in Cumming, GA, supervised by Hannah Funderburk. I earned my M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Troy University and specialize in offering compassionate, evidence-based care to children, teens, and adults. I work with individuals facing anxiety, ADHD, OCD, depression, eating disorders, grief, and other life concerns. Whether you want to master practical self-regulation tools or simply need a safe space to be truly heard, I offer a warm, empathetic environment dedicated to helping you heal and move forward.

Therapy is a collaborative healing process—not a one-size-fits-all model. I draw from CBT, DBT, IFS, play therapy, sand tray therapy, and a variety of other therapies to meet you right where you are.  I help you uncover your strengths, develop realworld coping tools, and process past experiences so you can navigate life with better ease and clarity.

Reaching out for support takes immense courage, but you don't have to navigate this season by yourself. Whether you are seeking practical coping strategies or a compassionate place to process heavy moments, I am here to support you every step of the way. I invite you to take the first step toward regaining your footing and schedule your initial session.

"Guided by both formal clinical training and my own lived experience navigating ADHD, anxiety, and loss, I have a deep, authentic respect for how heavy life’s challenges can feel. While every client’s journey is unique, this background shapes my commitment to providing a compassionate, non-judgmental space where we build practical, evidence-based skills to help you thrive—no matter what brings you through the door."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

Becoming a counselor grew out of a core belief I’ve held my whole life: everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and deep empathy. Psychology has always been a subject I’m passionate about, but what drives me is applying that knowledge to make a meaningful difference in people's daily lives. Having walked through my own experiences with anxiety, neurodiversity, and grief, I know how essential it is to have an empathetic guide. I dedicated my career to offering that exact bridge between clinical insight and genuine human connection.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with clients who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or exhausted by life’s circumstances—whether they are dealing with neurodiversity, life transitions, anxiety, grief, or any other concerns. I thrive with people who are looking for a collaborative space where they can be completely honest while learning practical, real-world skills to regain control of their lives.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

I wish everyone knew that healing is rarely a straight line, and needing support is never a sign of failure. Struggling with your symptoms or circumstances doesn't mean you aren't trying hard enough—it usually just means you need new tools, a different perspective, and a safe environment to build them.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

In our first session, our main goal is simply getting to know each other and ensuring you feel comfortable. We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy, what you hope to achieve, and what support looks like for you. In the early stages, we focus on establishing trust and identifying immediate, practical strategies to help relieve current stress.

What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?

My work is grounded in a deep belief in human resilience. Living through difficult life transitions and symptoms myself showed me that even in the most overwhelming seasons, growth and recovery are entirely possible. I blend my clinical training with this lived perspective to help clients identify their innate strengths, reframe their challenges, and move forward with confidence.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I continuously adapt our work based on where you are on any given day. Some weeks you might need structured, practical problem-solving; other weeks you might just need a compassionate space to process a heavy event. By regularly checking in on your goals and preferences, we ensure therapy always feels relevant and useful to you.
