My therapist has helped me better understand myself and make sense of my thoughts and emotions. She is able to act as a sounding board and provide helpful feedback for whatever is going on in my life. I always leave our sessions with clarity and less weight on my shoulders.

About Ja Nay
Ja'Nay Perry is a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor (LAPC) that specializes in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems, ASD (autism spectrum disorder) related problems, and intimacy issues. Ja'Nay has years of experience in the mental health field starting as a registered behavior technician (RBT) and later going into the counseling field. While she started off primarily working with children & adolescents she has now expanded her focus to individual adults and couples, focusing on intimacy, communication, and relationship management.
Ja'Nay holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Prairie View A&M University and a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Georgia. She has built her foundation on believing that when it comes to our mental health a lot of the thoughts and feelings we experience stems from our subconscious trying to communicate that there is something that we need to tend to. Her framework is growth-oriented and client-centered.
Ja'Nay believes that it does not matter if you are little or big, when we are facing life's challenges alone things can naturally feel like a lot. So if you are looking for a holistic approach, a none judgmental space, and a practice rooted in collaboration/empowerment - you have found the right person.

"I understand that life and relationships can feel overwhelming when we are working at it alone, sometimes that extra ear is all the support we need."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor because I realized I loved learning about peoples unique experiences and being able to place myself in their shoes. I often find myself relating to certain feelings and I find that there is a beauty in saying "while these feelings may not feel good they are human" and they can be worked through.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I typically work best with clients who are ready to do the work, I often find myself reminding clients that we are only scratching the surface and before things get better they may honestly feel worse. That's the sweet spot and it takes a willingness to continue on.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
It's not a easy process but it is worth it, going to therapy can and will bring up some challenging feelings. You may share things that you have never shared before but for a hour you are getting a chance to sit in a space that is completely yours with a person that wants to carry that mental load with you.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
The environment and what Thriveworks represents.
What inspires you?
Growth, we are constantly evolving and changing - something about knowing that we are constantly shedding layers of ourselves is a great reminder that what you have experienced does not define you, it is just a chapter in your book.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Our first session is me getting to know you, look at it as the preface. It is my opportunity to learn about what is the problem that you are seeing and how it is impacting your daily life. It will be intake but also a conversation, who is the person sitting across from me?
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I will be your advocate and cheerleader but I will also gently challenge, I believe that the best way to grow is to challenge some of the ideas we have about life especially our own and work through those uncomfortable feelings. If things begin to feel too hard I am open to feedback and will only go in to territories you are open to. My goal is to learn what you already know.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I am a creative & a mom, so if I am not spending my day doing something art related I am with my daughter and my partner exploring new areas.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Empathy and honesty, those are two things that will forever shape who I am. As long as I am able to be honest in who I am - I can look at others experiences as not a threat but a opportunity to learn. That's something that I also hope to instill in my daughter, the two superpowers of life.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
If nothing else I want all prospective clients to leave the first session feeling empowered, even if they do not continue on I want them to feel that there is someone out there willing to help them obtain the goals they have for their life. I also want them to leave feeling safe and supported.
