I appreciate the fact that my provider, Andrea Brock, tackles my concerns and magnifies them to me respectfully. I feel heard, seen, and acknowledged. The exercises and worksheets she provides applies to my daily life and interest.Nothing she shows me is irrelevant to my mental conditions or situations. Every session feels knowledgeable, refreshing and reassuring that I'm on the right track! I'm making more progress on my mental health journey than I've had with any other therapists in the past. About Andrea

Andrea Brock is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 12 years of experience in group homes, hospitals, crisis centers, and outpatient clinics. She enjoys working with preteens, teens, and adults of all ages. Andrea specializes in the treatment of anxiety, anger, depression, trauma, life transitions, and issues of identity. She is an LGBTQ+ affirming provider and is excited to help individuals become more comfortable with their true selves. Andrea uses an eclectic therapy style to offer her clients the most appropriate evidence-based practices to suit their needs. She is also highly skilled in explaining diagnoses, brain function, and medication effects in accessible and clear ways and enjoys helping clients understand all aspects of their care.

Andrea completed her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology at Georgia State University and focused on a specialty of Sex and Gender. She then went on to attain her Master of Social Work (MSW) at Georgia State as well. She is a third-generation pastor’s wife with firsthand experience in navigating Christian teachings, cultural expectations, and an LGBTQ+ identity. Andrea is also a foster parent with extensive training and individual experience in managing and healing the effects of trauma over time. She recognizes that trauma is often unseen and directly impacts how individuals grow, learn, and build relationships.

Many adults will experience one or more challenges in their life that can feel overwhelming. Andrea is able to walk with you in these moments to help you identify strengths and unwind unhelpful patterns to move forward into a happy, healthy life.

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I decided to be a counselor out of curiosity. I have always wanted to understand everyone and everything, all the time. Being a counselor allows me to constantly learn while being able to act as a support.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I work best with clients who prefer an organized and structured approach. I see each client as a partner in treatment, with the end goal of being comfortable and secure to end treatment once their goals are met. I love to see my clients grow and succeed in becoming happier and healthier versions of themselves.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I love to work with clients who are brand-new to therapy or those who have had a less-than-great experience and are shy of counseling. I work hard to help clients feel comfortable and to engage on a level the client prefers. I enjoy the challenge of working together to find what works best.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

Mental illness is caused by real phenomena in body chemistry, organ function, and learned behaviors. It is not a question of "what is wrong with you," it is a question of "what happened." Healing is found in a balance of these things, just as it is for more obvious physical ailments or injuries.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I choose to practice at Thriveworks for two main reasons. First, Thriveworks has an excellent rating among consumers and I want to be part of an organization that serves its clients well. Second, there is a strong focus on flexibility; I love being able to balance my family and work life and practice what I preach!

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

In our first session, clients can expect to briefly discuss housekeeping items such as HIPAA and confidentiality expectations. The bulk of the session is meant to be a partnership interview; I learn about the concerns and history of my clients while they have an opportunity to ask questions of me. My intent is to be supportive, but also to ensure the best match for clients. I typically close the session by offering a skill or recommendation to help relieve some of the initial symptoms a client reports.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

My job is not to judge you, but to help you. The more open and honest you are able to be with me, the more I can help. This includes using the language style, descriptions, or euphemisms you are most comfortable with to get your points across.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I am an active person and I enjoy powerlifting, horseback riding, and playing tennis. I love being creative with charcoal, paints, and clay. In addition, I am a big fan of treasure hunting at local thrift shops.
