Why did you decide to become a counselor?
Because of my experiences growing up with a dysfunctional family and having mental illness in my family.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Clients who are open to learning and engage with the homework I eventually will give after each session. It is wonderful to see growth happen with the collaboration of client and therapist.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Struggle and emotional distress is a natural part of life and not something to hide.
What inspires you?
Learning new things and interactions with clients.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Most clients experience an increase in anxiety when they come to a first appointment. In their first sessions with me they learn quickly that they are safe and have a person who will listen and respond to their issues. They also learn that I am very approachable.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Establish the reason they are seeking therapy at that time if possible and outline the process of therapy as well as establish some initial goals of the client.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Take long walks, Travel and meet new people as well as spend time with my nuclear family.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Jolly, quick witted and interested in learning everything I can. Curiosity.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
I saw a family once that had a teenage daughter and younger children. Their main complaint was that the teenage daughter wore her hair in a very "weird" way. I eventually asked the teenage daughter to make everyone in the family's hair look like hers for the next session. They all came in with their hair styled like the daughter's and she had done all of their hair. This created unity where there had been misunderstanding and division. They came for 2 more sessions to solidify what they had learned from the experience. It was very successful.
