Raina Smith completed her Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Jacksonville University. Raina utilizes different treatment approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and cinema therapy. Cinema therapy allows clients to learn more about themselves and gain a whole new perspective by exploring storylines and connecting to characters.

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I decided to become a counselor because I was fascinated with how roles, interests, and environments play into a person's personality and how a person's personality can change over time.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with teens, adolescents, children, parents, and women.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to continue working with children and teens.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that all therapists are not the same, and they do have autonomy in their sessions.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose Thriveworks because of the freedom to create my schedule and the ability to work with a wider variety of clients.
What inspires you?
My family, films, and books.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to accomplish getting to know the individual and understand why they are in therapy.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I enjoy thinking outside of the box and trying to find creative ways to help individuals reach their goals.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I like going to different Asian markets with my husband, I enjoy going to the movies and starting different shows. I also enjoy finding new places to eat and checking out different coffeeshops.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I love to laugh.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
I taught a client who was 9 years old how to tie his shoes and he was so proud of himself that he could not wait to show his mom and let her know she no longer had to tie his cleats for him.
