"As one who has experienced personal trauma, I have overcome adversity and loss and have gained the trust and confidence of my peers."
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I chose to become a licensed mental health provider because I see a need in the immediate community for treatment and assessment that includes caring and nurturing. I wanted to give back to the community I shared and develop positive relationships with others while supporting their diverse needs and recovery goals.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with clients who are willing participants eager to challenge their current living situation within a supported environment and undergo process-oriented treatment to ensure their recovery.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
One thing I would like all clients to know about therapy is that it is not all clinical, medical, or restrictive and that client's have choices about the outcome of their therapy. We can help you build and adjust the resources inherent in your life and restore the respect and dignity you so well deserve.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
Clients can expect an intake assessment covering history, the initial problem or concern, daily activities, extracurricular activities, preferences, home and family life. Previous therapy, medical conditions, and medication. I will "narrow down the focus" to identify a problem to work on during the course of our sessions. I will initiate a treatment plan outlining goals, objectives, and mode of therapy.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My Buddhist practice has highlighted my career as a means of research into peace, culture, and education and guiding with specific values of the inherent potential of each individual, structured guidance as to how to live respectfully and with dignity, and helping others to achieve their goals.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I tailor therapy to meet each client's unique needs by identifying their cultural preferences, beliefs, and understanding of their problem. Forming a working hypothesis of the problem and utilizing techniques such as disputing irrational or negative beliefs and substituting a more appropriate and beneficial belief. Irrational beliefs may stem from childhood or later and interfere with our daily lives in the present. Changing the mindset of clients alters the physiological, emotional, and subsequently behavior for a healthier way of coping. I would ascertain goals based on what you would like to achieve and provide methods of therapy to reduce anxiety, depression, etc. and build a strong resilience towards the future.
