Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I grew up with a mother who struggled with mental illness and I saw the effects it had on her as well as the different ways it affected all family members. I wanted to help other individuals and families navigate through these challenges with support and empathy. As I've navigated through marriage and parenthood myself, I've come to understand the challenges she was facing and want to help others, especially women, find balance and satisfaction in their own lives, which are often focused more on others.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Adults, especially females and couples navigating through life changes, and men who are struggling with building healthy relationships.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I work best with women who are facing overwhelm and frustration in their daily life and want to learn better strategies to manage their stress and anger and find personal satisfaction.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Most of our anxiety and distress comes from our own thoughts. We can find more satisfaction and less worry when we recognize how we are feeding into our negative self-talk and work to change that.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
In this new post-pandemic world, many people are struggling but cannot find help in traditional settings. Thriveworks allows me to offer services online as well as in-person so you can choose the modality that works best for you.
What inspires you?
Kindness, music, magic, travel, and humor. The world is a really negative place right now and it is easy for people to feel despair and act defensively. I am inspired by those who try to make a positive difference in people's everyday lives through simple kind actions and support.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect to be welcomed with non-judgmental curiosity about their reasons for seeking support, and provided with clarity on expectations around confidentiality, sessions, schedules, billing, and other practical matters.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to use the first session to get an overall picture of what brings the client in and what they most want to accomplish through therapy. It is also important to see if we connect on an individual basis and determine whether we are a good fit to work together.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am a professional with almost two decades of experience, and hopeful that we can make good connection to enable us to work well together to meet the goals that are important to them.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love music and theatre and sing in choir.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am very open and honest, I can't say "everything is fine" when it's not.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
I had a female newly divorced client who was stuck in negative self-talk and anger towards her ex-husband and her family over their behavior. Over her time in therapy (about 1 year), she was able to recognize how her expectations of what others "should do" was keeping her stuck. She shifted her focus to what she could control and was able to take steps towards rebuilding her own life and reduce her anger about what others did or did not do. She improved co-parenting, started a new job, and started dating again.
