Why did you decide to become a counselor?
When I was in college I saw a therapist regularly while dealing with some personal mental health challenges. We developed a great rapport and he started mentioning that I should become a therapist myself. A major reason that I believe that I am a good therapist is because I have worked through my own challenges and am able to empathize with many different people.
What types of clients to you work with best?
I work very well with children and teens dealing with grief and loss and mental health issues. I think I work the best with adults dealing with similar issues. Often adults are harder to persuade and to change because their habits are more ingrained that a child or teen. Being able to break a destructive pattern in an adult is therefore extremely rewarding.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with any and every client matched to me, but I am really excited to work more with couples and families in addition to individuals. I believe it is very valuable to see first hand the family system the client comes from to establish context.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
As a therapist, I am not here to tell you what to do. Advice is cheap. I am here to help you understand what is behind your irrational thought or feeling and once we do this together, the answers of what to do will be clear and you won't need advice.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I was excited to find a hybrid program to do both in person and online counseling. I also was very impressed at how well organized the company is as a whole.
What inspires you?
Helping others. For me it is so addicting and so rewarding!
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I will complete a biopsychosocial test and I will be primarily information gathering. I will build a rapport by being cheerful, constructive, supportive and positive. I will establish ground rules and then take stock of what the client needs and the way that the rules need to be enforced and how this client should be held accountable.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
A major part of it is to establish trust and to begin to build a rapport. Making them smile is important.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Go for long drives or walks to nicer areas in upstate CT. I spend time with my nephews and niece as much as possible.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
That I have heard it all. I worked at a homeless shelter with people that have all kinds of issues, challenges and secrets. I will not be thrown by anything you say and I certainly will not judge.
