About Michael
Michael A. Roohr is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who works with individuals as well as couples and families. Michael has experience helping clients with depression, academic difficulties, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mood disorders, self-harming behaviors, and adjusting to life-changing events. He completed his Master of Arts (MA) in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of St. Joseph.
Michael recognizes and respects the unique perspectives and backgrounds that each of his clients brings to the therapy room. This respect helps him to co-create long-lasting solutions to problems and to develop strengths that can form the foundation for a healthier future. Making the first step and reaching out for help is often an act of bravery that is to be respected and honored. Michael’s role as a therapist is to create an environment of acceptance, safety, and honesty for his clients where you can collaborate on building a new perspective and developing the tools to create long-lasting change.

"I believe that each of us has the capacity to heal, grow, and to develop the tools that we need to find happiness and fulfillment in life."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
After years of working in the corporate world, I sought an opportunity to change to a career path that would bring a genuine, positive change to peoples' lives. Obtaining the training and the tools needed to be an effective therapist was one of the best choices of my life.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are able to keep an open mind and who are willing to act on the process that we develop through our sessions.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with anyone who recognizes aspects of their lives that they want to change and have made a decision to chart a new course for their lives.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish that all clients knew that no matter how things look at the moment, they possess the resources needed to make the future better.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks provides a unique and powerful service, providing their members the chance to obtain the best possible care for their mental health.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by resilience and strength that I have seen in my clients over the years.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In the first session, clients can expect an opportunity to share their story and their hopes for the future. They will also have a chance to learn about my style and approach to treatment.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In the first session, I want to learn important details about the issue that brought someone to therapy and how they will know when therapy has been successful.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Clients should know that I will always respect their perspectives and concerns. I recognize that people are not defined by their problems and I will focus on helping people move forward rather than dwelling on past mistakes or regrets.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love hiking, tending to my gardens and indoor plants, and working on my classic car.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
One thing that defines me is my empathy for other living things, human and otherwise.
