About Karlene
My name is Karlene Chisholm. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Connecticut. I have had the honor and privilege of working with individuals, families, and couples—both young and old—for the past 27 years. I have experience working with children and teens (ages 6–19), young adults, couples, and older adults. I have worked with a range of concerns, including ADHD, ODD, grief and loss, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and marital issues.
When working with clients, the first step toward successful treatment is creating a safe environment where they can fully engage in the therapeutic process. Once that engagement is established, we can work together to develop treatment goals, encourage behavioral change, and implement appropriate therapeutic approaches.
As a therapist, I believe that my clients already possess the tools they need within themselves to heal and grow. My job is to help facilitate that change and support them throughout the process.

"As a child, I always wondered why certain things always seemed to happen to me. As an adult, I learned how to use these experiences to be a better person. As a therapist, I learned that these experiences taught me to be empathetic and help others who are dealing with similar circumstances. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
A good friend of mine in high school was in a horrific accident. I had the opportunity to help in his healing process. At that point in my life, I decided I want to help others.
What types of clients do you work best with?
Clients that are new to the therapy process, as well as clients who are willing to use techniques provided and incorporate them into their daily lives.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
Therapy is a nonjudgement zone. (Honesty, is the best way to achieve positive therapeutic goals in a timely matter).
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
Therapy is a process. It is important for a client to feel safe and comfortable with the therapist in order to share their inner most feelings. The first few sessions focused on developing a therapeutic relationship.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
As a therapist, I meet my clients where they are. This can look different for each member participating in the therapy session.
