About Mark
My name is Mark Underwood and I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist who was additionally trained to specifically treat anxiety and clinical depression. I currently work as a civilian psychotherapist on military installations during the day and see private clients in the evenings and weekends. My experience is that people come to therapy because they don't like what's going on in their head or going on in their relationships. I will give you common-sense explanations and easy-to-implement techniques to improve either situation that are real-world practical and proven effective.
My approach is relaxed and conversational. While I will work to fully understand how you ended up where you are, we're not taking the unnecessarily long road to make things better. I will be direct and to the point and help you get better as smoothly and quickly as possible using cognitive behavioral and behavioral principles and techniques that work.
My goal is for you to feel relaxed and comfortable in the office and see me as something like a mentor or personal trainer. I want people to not see our appointments as "I have to go see my therapist," but as "I'm going to talk to Mark today." If we get to that point, I believe we will make headway with whatever is troubling and hindering you in life.

"I see myself as a regular person who happens to be trained as a Psychotherapist to help other people understand and resolve their anxiety, depression and relationship problems. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I saw the need back in my Undergraduate years for qualified and understanding mental health providers and decided to work towards becoming one.
What types of clients do you work best with?
People who are looking for a normal conversational process where they can get the guidance to feel better as quickly as possible.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
Everyone always believes they are the "only one that feels this way" and this causes shame and fear to see a Therapist. The reality is that almost everyone has the same problems to one degree or another and they should not allow this belief to prevent them from improving their lives and getting rid of the baggage they have been carrying around.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
A relaxed and conversational introduction and setting and interest in who they are and how they got here.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
I live in the real world, not one of dusty books with complicated and over intellectualized concepts and principles that are only for the provider to maybe understand themselves and probably are theories that won't be understood much less work. Mental Health is not as complicated as Therapists like to make it. The principles are simple and can be explained to and used by the average person and that is my strength to do just that.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
Listening and asking questions to explore their individual experiences and path to the present and making the session about "them" and not "me".
