Hi, I’m Gwen Koenig, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with 30 years of experience in child welfare and behavioral health. I’ve developed a deep understanding of how trauma and adversity shape the way we think, feel, and connect with others. I welcome adolescents, adults, and families into my practice, many of whom are struggling with depression, anxiety, major life changes, or past trauma. My goal is to help you feel understood, build practical tools for managing what feels overwhelming, and rediscover a sense of hope and connection. I welcome clients of all backgrounds, including those who identify as LGBTQ+.

My approach is collaborative, warm, and grounded in the belief that you already have strengths to build on. I draw on a strengths-based lens, a person-in-environment perspective, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you build coping skills at your own pace. You can expect a safe, nonjudgmental space with honest support.

Reaching out for help takes courage. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or ready for something to change, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I believe in your capacity to heal and grow, and I’d be honored to walk alongside you. When you’re ready, I invite you to schedule an appointment so we can begin this journey together.

"As a therapist and a mom raising three adolescent boys, I know firsthand that healing happens in the everyday moments of life, and I've devoted my career to helping individuals and families find their way through challenges toward connection, resilience, and growth."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I became a therapist because I believe healing happens through relationship. I value the trust that grows in a therapeutic relationship, and I find deep meaning in walking alongside people as they discover their own strength, work through what's holding them back, and move toward the life they want. Being part of that journey is a privilege I never take for granted.

What types of clients do you work best with?

I work best with people who are ready to take an active role in their own growth. You don't need to have all the answers or know exactly where to start, but a willingness to be open, engage in the process, and share what you're feeling and needing makes a real difference. Clients who are curious about change, even if it feels uncertain or a little scary, tend to thrive in our work together.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?

I wish every client knew that you won't feel like this forever. When you're in the middle of depression, anxiety, or a painful life change, it can feel like the heaviness will never lift, but feelings are not permanent, even the ones that seem overwhelming right now. Healing isn't always a straight line, and there may be good days and hard days along the way, but change is possible. With support, time, and small steps forward, many people find relief, clarity, and a renewed sense of hope. Wherever you are today is not where you have to stay.

What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?

In our first session, my main focus will be on listening and getting to know you. We'll talk about what brought you to therapy now, as well as the experiences throughout your life that have shaped who you are and what you're facing today. You're always in control of what you share, and there's no pressure to tell your whole story at once. Share only what feels comfortable, and we'll go at a pace that feels right for you. In the early stages of therapy, we'll build trust, clarify what you hope to gain from our work together, and begin setting goals that feel meaningful to you. My hope is that you leave each session feeling heard, understood, and a little more hopeful about what's ahead.

How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?

I believe no two people are alike, so no two therapy journeys should look the same. I start by listening closely to understand your unique strengths, your life circumstances, and what you're hoping to explore. From there, we clarify your goals together, and I draw on the approaches that fit you best, whether that's practical CBT tools for managing anxious thoughts, motivational interviewing to help you work through ambivalence about change, or a strengths-based focus that helps you build on what's already working. As your needs shift over time, our work shifts with you. My goal is for therapy to feel like it was designed for you, because it is.
