Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I was raised smack dab in the middle of five children, and as such, I accepted the role of peace keeper, especially as the buffer between my older and younger brothers. I was always curious about why I was who I was, what made others who they were, and about the dynamics of relationships. I am very empathetic, very sensitive to others' emotions as well as my own. I have worked hard on improving my mental health and relationships, and so, naturally, gravitated toward helping others do the same.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I'm most excited to work with clients who are well motivated to improve themselves in all aspects of themselves and areas of their lives. Clients who are courageous, who are willing to be vulnerable, and who are willing to do the hard and often emotionally painful work necessary to create the quality of life they so richly deserve.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I want all clients to know that, ultimately, the power and responsibility for improving themselves, for becoming healthier mentally, emotionally and relationally, lies with them. The therapist cannot make them healthy. A therapist facilitates growth through providing the right environment for it to occur. The client is responsible for entering this environment and taking advantage of it. They must do the work, most of which takes place outside of the therapy session.
What inspires you?
Life, people and animals. But not necessarily in that order.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect to see a cheerful, personable, caring and empathetic therapist smiling at, and laughing with, them.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to begin developing our therapeutic relationship. I want to review the personal history of the client, identify their reasons for seeking therapy, and identify their initial goals.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I'm very funny, with a dry sense of humor. I especially want them to know that I deeply care for people. That I'm very interested in who they are. That I sincerely want to help them become as healthy as possible in as many ways as possible, And that I have all the knowledge and skills necessary to assist them with reaching their goals and more.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy Tai Chi, exercising, reading, watching movies, napping, road trips in the mountains of Colorado and other states, archery, pickleball, and spending time with my siblings and their families.
