About Benjamin
I am Dr. Benjamin T. Finlayson, PhD, LMFT-S, a relational and couples therapist specializing in LGBTQIA+ affirming care. I work with individuals, couples, and families navigating relationship challenges, communication difficulties, identity exploration, and life transitions. My clients often seek deeper connection, stronger communication, and practical tools to build healthier, more satisfying relationships while feeling truly understood and supported in therapy.
I use evidence-based methods including EFT, SFBT, and relational approaches to support clients through relationship growth, conflict resolution, identity exploration, career and family transitions, and personal enrichment. Clients can expect practical tools, compassionate guidance, and strategies to foster meaningful, lasting change.
Seeking support can feel challenging, but you don't have to navigate it alone. I am committed to creating a safe, affirming space where you feel seen and valued. When you're ready, I welcome the opportunity to support you in deepening connection, enhancing communication, and cultivating fulfilling relationships.

"I believe healing happens in relationships, and I am committed to creating an LGBTQIA+ affirming space where you feel seen, safe, and empowered to navigate identity, life transitions, and emotional pain with hope and support."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I decided to become a therapist because I believe relationships are central to healing and that everyone deserves a space where they feel truly seen, heard, and valued. My passion for relational therapy and LGBTQIA+ affirming care grew from witnessing how supportive, evidence-based counseling can transform lives, strengthen relationships, and help people move toward deeper connection and authenticity.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with individuals, couples, and families who are seeking stronger relationships, improved communication, and greater emotional connection. Many of my clients are navigating life transitions, identity exploration, relationship conflict, or stress related to career and family systems, and they are motivated to grow, reflect, and build healthier, more meaningful connections.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I wish all clients knew that therapy is not about being “fixed,” but about being understood and supported while building the skills and insight needed for lasting change. Healing takes time, and progress often comes through small, consistent steps, selfcompassion, and a trusting therapeutic relationship.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In the first session, clients can expect a welcoming and collaborative conversation focused on understanding their story, goals, and what brings them to therapy. In the early stages, we work together to build trust, identify patterns, set clear goals, and develop practical strategies that support growth, connection, and meaningful progress.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My practice is guided by values of compassion, authenticity, inclusion, and relational connection. I believe in creating an affirming and respectful space where individuals and couples can explore their experiences without judgment, and I am deeply committed to honoring each client’s identity, relationships, and unique life story.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I tailor therapy by listening closely to each client’s goals, strengths, and challenges and then adapting evidence-based approaches like EFT, SFBT, and relational therapy to fit their specific situation. Every treatment plan is collaborative and flexible, ensuring that therapy remains relevant, practical, and aligned with what matters most to the client.
