About Kathryn
Kathy Potts is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with 9 years in the field of counseling. Kathy completed her Bachelor of Science (BS) in Psychology with a minor in Christian Counseling at Liberty University. She completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) at Loma Linda University. Kathy’s personal experience as a wife and mother of six has allowed her a diverse outlook on overcoming stress and family balance. As a widow, she has a unique perspective on the journey of grief and loss and offers support to those on this path. Kathy utilizes multiple treatment approaches, including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), solution focused, and a strength-based approach to counseling.

Get to know Kathryn
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
After a life altering experience, I had wonderful support system to assist me with traveling a new journey of a being widow and then new single mother with young children to be cared for. After realizing this support was not readily available to others, I returned to college to become equipped to best offer that support and assist others.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I am flexible and work well with both adults, couples, parents, adolescents.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Anyone wanting and open to working on change will be those client's I am most excited to work with.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
Negativity does not have to be permanent, change is always possible.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks offers such a new and varied clientele for me. I am excited to work remotely and not have a long commute while making my own schedule.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by those individuals who overcome adversity and by those who have been able to not lose faith during tough and stressful times.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
First session will get to know one another, have the client share the reasons for seeking therapy, set goals on what they would wish to work on, signing consent forms, developing rapport, etc.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Setting goals and breaking them down into a workable treatment plan. Having the client feel empowered for the tasks of change that we will work on, bringing them towards accomplishing in future sessions.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I will advocate and encourage them to identify and reach the goals they desire to set.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to garden, spend time with my family, cook for a crowd, walk on the beach or in even in my neighborhood in the fresh air, and watch superhero movies with family (yes, I'm a nerd at heart).
