Laurie Hoyt is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 20 years of experience. She specializes in helping individuals dealing with grief/loss, life adjustments, relationships, depression, anxiety, faith, anger, addiction recovery, trauma, emotional expression and coping, codependency, and behavioral issues. Laurie enjoys helping others understand the process of healing by identifying concerns, strengths, needs, and goals. She seeks to help clients uplift themselves in healthy ways so they can continue their journey.
Laurie received her Master’s in Clinical Social Work from Fordham University. She uses approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, culturally sensitive therapy, emotionally focused therapy, and Christian counseling, among others.

Get to know Laurie
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
My background in nursing led me to want to become a therapist. The patients were wanting to talk about their thoughts, emotions, adjustments about their health issues. They would request from me time to talk. I was being assigned to patients with mental health issues, death and dying, addictions, psych scatter bed and other.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Trauma, generalized issues, coping, military, coping with medical issues, faith based, Christian therapy, grief work, social skills, those who have completed addiction recovery, depression, anxiety, codependency, loneliness, social skills, family members coping with deployments, death and dying, any clinical issue not mentioned here, ask me.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Christians, Bible therapy, those serious about growing through therapy, cognitive and behavioral issues, grief work, social skills, coping with medical issues, depression, anxiety, teens through seniors (though no Alzheimer or Dementia}, young adults, coping with stress, social skills, anything not listed ask me.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients really new not to fear the therapy process. If you are, please bring this up in session. Also please remember, though I work with you on your reasons for coming to therapy, it is the client's responsibility to put effort into the process.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks provides me with the client base without my having to do marketing. I'm free to do the therapy. I can focus on my clients!
What inspires you?
Seeing the growth, the ah ha moments in clients when suddenly they got this! Clients benefitting from therapy process, seeing them feeling lighter, less heavy emotionally, hearing from them they are coping effectively. Hearing from them that they get it now and are ready to move on without treatment.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
No fear! Relax! the first session is for us to become familiar with each other, start the intake process and some formalities. Beginning to get familiar with each other through intake session. Answering their questions. Seeing them learn they can feel safe to express themselves in a healthy way.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Putting their mind at ease. Helping them to relax and be honest about intake information and process. Hearing about what they want to accomplish. Answering their questions and what they would like to start working on.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I don't bite! I can be their strength for a time. I can help them see how they can be their own strength. They can trust. We talk about whatever they want to work on in sessions, though with guidance. While in therapy I will walk with them in their growth.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Whatever I can! Go for walks, visit people, attend church, seeing new places, eating out, being outdoors. Be with friends, connect with family. Maybe take day trips.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I have inner strength and am diligent. I also have a sense of humor.
