Get to know Maria

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

To help those who are dealing with a variety of mental health conditions overcome daily challenging obstacles, improve their mental health, and live a meaningful life.

What types of clients do you work with best?

Adolescents, middle-aged, and older adults who are seeking care aligned with their specific mental health needs and require prescription medication to manage their mental health symptoms.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

Patients with several mental health conditions across the life span including but not limited to ADHD, autism, anger, anxiety, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, substance use disorder, PTSD, insomnia, and mood disorders whose conditions are significantly impacting their daily lives.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

Not to ignore reliable, proven, sound medical advice in favor of something they read online.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

Thriveworks offers various opportunities for patients, such as easily accessible care, flexible schedules, and a wide range of insurance coverage. These patients receive mental health services in a convenient, safe space, wherever they are, in the comfort of their homes.

What inspires you?

Seeing the progress and overall health improvement I have fostered in my patients inspires me the most.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Our initial meeting will be the intake session. We will start by collecting data on the reason for the visit. This will help me to formulate a diagnosis and create an individualized treatment plan that meets the client's healthcare needs.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

My primary goal is to build rapport, determine whether we are a good fit for the therapeutic partnership, establish a secure environment for collaboration, discuss treatment and expectations, and set goals for future visits.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

'm a Dual-Certified Medical and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner licensed in Virginia. I have over 30 years of nursing education and experience in various healthcare settings, including 6 years as a Nurse Practitioner and the most recent 2 years as a PMHNP. I have cared for individuals with various Medical, Behavioral, Psychiatric, and Mental Health conditions and Addictions. My experience in medication-assisted treatment, which is successful in treating Substance Use Disorders, can benefit some individuals in maintaining sobriety and recovery.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

In my spare time, I love traveling, cooking, entertaining, spending time with family and friends, and volunteering at community events.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I’m compassionate and empathetic, dedicated, an active listener, and detail-oriented.
