Why did you decide to become a psychiatric provider?
I had a strong interest in health care from a tender age, as I wanted to work in the field of medicine. I was enthusiastic about helping people and assisting them to achieve optimal health and wellness. I enjoy empowering and supporting patients to make better health and lifestyle decisions. I grew to love mental health after losing my childhood friend to suicide. I believed her death could have been prevented if only her family had a better insight into the warning signs of suicide. My friend's death turned my life around and led me to discover the causes of various mental health conditions and how they can be treated or prevented. I later gained my MSD in nursing specializing in mental health at Walden University. I chose to become a mental health practitioner to have the opportunity to improve the mental health of patients and their quality of life. Being a provider allows me to work independently and have autonomy over my practice. Likewise, I am now able to work in various settings and be more flexible with managing work and family life. In addition, being a psychiatric provider is a rewarding career path to see people improve and make a positive impact on patients and their families to live life to the fullest.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients new that emotional pain is not something that should be hidden or never spoken about, and to never fear talking about what they are going through. Besides, asking for help is a courageous step to begin your healing process. No man is an island; no man stands alone, seek help while it may be found, and do not suffer in silence. You will be surprised to know that many people care and are willing to help you through your struggles. Do not be discouraged if your journey to recovery takes longer than you expected; remember that a lifelong journey takes place one day, one step at a time; be patient; you can do this. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Besides, if your brain doesn’t function properly, everything else will fall apart in time. Therefore, do not allow the stigma from society to prevent you from gaining the help you need to overcome your mental health struggles.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I have always been looking for an organization for long-term employment within mental health with high standards. Thriveworks allows people with mental health conditions to have access to exceptional providers in the comfort of their homes. I like that thrive works offer fixability and provide ongoing education training for providers. I want to be a part of a company that empowers its clients and provides exceptional services, as this will help my growth, development, and success as a nurse practitioner.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
For the client’s first encounter with me they will be greeted with warmth and empathy. They will be allowed to be them selves and treated with respect. The first session will be geared towards building a therapeutic relationship and gathering data to discover treatment goals. The client will be informed about the proceedings, boundaries, and what will be expected. Likewise, efforts will be made to alleviate fears and anxiety especially for first time clients. The provider will listen attentively and allow the client to voice their concerns to make appropriate treatment choices. Overall, the client will be assessed in a safe, and nonjudgmental environment.
