Why did you decide to become a psychiatric provider?

One of the biggest reasons that I choose a mental health career is because I enjoy helping people. I believe that Individuals who have a mental illness need different kinds of help, including therapy and assistance with connecting to resources and managing medications. Changing Lives My favorite thing about my career is that it help me to help in changing lives. Helping people learn to manage their condition and live a healthy life is extremely rewarding.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

I am a dual certified as a family and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. I began my nursing career as a cardiac floor nurse at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem North Carolina. During that time, I attended Winston Sate State University’s Family Nurse Practitioner program. As an FNP, I worked with underserved populations in community health clinics and regional community services board settings. I have also worked with people in recovery from substance and alcohol use disorder, Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) Services. While working in family practice and community health, I found many of my clients also suffer from mental health conditions. They are often undiagnosed and untreated because of the shortage of mental health providers in the community. Knowing this, I pursued my Doctorate in Nursing Practice/ Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certificate from University of Massachusetts global. As a psychiatric I will continue with my experience with serving underserved populations in community health clinics and regional community services and my working with people in recovery from substance and alcohol use disorder. She has also worked with people in recovery from substance and alcohol use. I look at an individual with a whole person perspective. I like to look at the “big picture” for each client. While working in a behavioral health setting, I understand that the brain does not function independently from all of the other parts of the body. With this in mind, my approaches in helping people with mental health concerns is also from a medical perspective and knows when it is time to refer to other members of the medical team. I am motivated to help each of my clients navigate their way to a happy and fulfilling life through lifestyle changes, supportive therapy, and medication management if warranted.

Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?

For me each time I meet with a client I always think of, Instead of following customer problem + my solution = success story, think about how my company’s solution fits with the customer’s mission. A male patient that I treated as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Central Virginia Health Services (CVHS) has a long history of substance abuse which caused multiple problems in his life including difficulty holding a job, and strained relations with his loving and supportive family, and repeated homelessness. I worked with his sister to coordinate transitional housing placement, but he left the center without notice, saying he was going back to stay with family. He returned the very next day and said that he had made a mistake and wanted to continue in the Program. When transitional housing was being coordinated, he was asked to consider accepting an alternate placement in one of the substance abuse treatment facilities. Although he was not sure about accepting this proposal, he agreed to meet with the Program Director with his sister. The initial meeting went very well, and the patient decided he would very much like to enter the Program. He progresses well through the Program and learned a lot about the debilitating effects of substance abuse and addiction, particularly as they affected his own life goals and stability. He continued to apply himself daily, until he successfully graduated from the Program, admitting that he was glad that he had come back the next day to continue his treatment with medication for alcohol abuse. He is in very good spirits these days, having decided to stay on at the outreach program in their step-down housing program as he begins working towards a job training program to re-enter the workforce. I am no longer at CVHS but I am sure he has moved forward in life with his newfound sobriety, free from the negative effects of addiction.
