About Tamekia
My name is Tamekia Ruff, and I am a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) dedicated to evidence-based mental health care. I have experience working with adolescents and adults facing challenges such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood disorders, trauma, stress-related concerns, and life transitions. I work with individuals seeking clarity, emotional balance, improved coping skills, and support navigating personal, academic, or professional challenges. My goal is to create a safe, collaborative environment where clients feel heard, respected, and empowered in their mental wellness journey.
My approach to care is collaborative, supportive, and individualized to each client's unique needs and goals. I combine evidence-based treatment, thoughtful medication management, and therapeutic support to help clients understand their mental health. I strive to create a warm, nonjudgmental space where clients feel comfortable and involved in their care.
I understand that reaching out for support can feel overwhelming, but you do not have to navigate life's challenges alone. Healing and growth are possible, and taking the first step toward care is a meaningful act of strength and self-investment. I welcome the opportunity to work alongside you toward a healthier, more balanced, and fulfilling life.

"I believe in creating a compassionate, judgment-free space where I partner with clients to support healing, resilience, and meaningful progress toward emotional wellness. "

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Growing up, I witnessed many family members and friends struggle with mental health issues, often without seeking the help they needed. This experience opened my eyes to the stigma surrounding mental health and the impact it has on individuals and their loved ones. I saw how difficult it was for them to navigate their challenges alone, and it deeply affected me. I decided to become a PMHNP to help others find the support and guidance that I wish they had sought. I believe in the importance of breaking the stigma around mental health and empowering individuals to seek help, fostering an environment where they feel safe and understood.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with clients who are open to exploring their thoughts and feelings, regardless of their background or experiences. I particularly resonate with individuals who have faced challenges in expressing their emotions or have encountered barriers to seeking help in the past. My approach is to meet them where they are, providing a non-judgmental space for growth and healing.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I wish all clients knew that therapy is a journey and not a quick fix. Healing takes time and effort, and it's okay to have ups and downs along the way. I encourage clients to be patient with themselves as they navigate their emotions and experiences, and to remember that seeking help is a courageous step toward a better quality of life.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
In the first session, clients can expect a warm and welcoming environment where they can share their thoughts and feelings without judgment. I usually begin by discussing confidentiality, the therapy process, and what they hope to achieve. During the early stages of therapy, we’ll focus on building a trusting relationship, allowing clients to express themselves freely. I encourage open dialogue and aim to understand their unique experiences and challenges. Together, we will set goals for our work, ensuring that the therapy is tailored to their specific needs.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My practice is informed by a strong belief in empathy, respect, and the importance of the therapeutic relationship. Personally, I have faced challenges that have deepened my understanding of mental health issues, allowing me to relate to clients on a more personal level. I value diversity and strive to create an inclusive space where clients feel safe and understood, regardless of their background. My experiences have taught me the importance of resilience and self-compassion, which I emphasize in my work.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
To tailor therapy effectively, I first conduct a thorough assessment to understand each client’s individual circumstances, preferences, and goals. I employ various therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques, or person-centered therapy, depending on what resonates with the client. Regular feedback sessions are integral to my process, allowing us to adjust our approach as needed. I believe that therapy is not onesize-fits-all, and I am committed to adapting my methods to best support each client's journey.
